How do you redesign a car that created one of the most successful and popular segments in recent motoring history? With bold design and accessible technology at its heart, the new Qashqai is the end product of a remarkable development story - a journey that marks the start of the next generation of crossovers.

Replacing and improving on a design loved and admired by nearly two million owners is no easy task. Led by Nissan's chief creative officer Shiro Nakamura, the UK-based Nissan Design Europe team quickly established three core values for the new Qashqai.


"The inspiration was three-fold," explains Shiro Nakamura. "Athletic Agility, Smart Premium and In Control are themes that run through every element of the design. This car represents several years of dedicated work. We have created an all-new design that builds on the success of the first generation Qashqai and confirms Nissan's crossover leadership."

Athletic agility

Drawing on Nissan's crossover family DNA, new Qashqai features a bold, sporty stance that is instantly recognisable yet new and exciting.

One of the key elements of the Qashqai's design form is the relationship between the wheels and the rest of the body. "We opted to change the wheel arch volumes to accentuate the car's strength and confidence," explains Darryl Scriven, Design Excellence Manager, Nissan Design Europe.  "By creating longer window lines we were able to add a little more mass around the wheels. We wanted to use the middle of the body as a connector to link the four corners and a shape that would be more athletic. A wheel-oriented design such as this shows more power and protection and suggests that the car has a proud, inner strength."


The relationship between the upper and lower sections of the bonnet was another area where Nissan's design team invested considerable time and expertise. "There's now a lot more movement in the lower part of the body with less of a contrast between the two sections," explains Darryl Scriven. "Take the rear bumper, for example. The first-generation car had a fairly simple overrider look while the new car has a more sophisticated diffuser-style design. We've given the protective parts a more premium feel."

Taisuke Nakamura, Design Director, Nissan Design Europe adds: "We've added more emotion to the car. There's more movement on the surfaces and a clearer definition of volumes.

"We wanted to make the new Qashqai more modern and I'm confident that we have achieved that goal. Look at the front quarter and you can see the contrast of dynamic volumes and very sharp graphics of the headlamps and radiator grille. The V motion grille leads into the bonnet sculpture to stretch the dynamic motion from the grille towards the A-pillar. This contrasts with the fluid body and dynamic shapes."

Even seemingly simple elements such as the roofline have undergone a complete redesign, as Darryl Scriven explains: "The new Qashqai has a ‘faster' roofline than the first-generation car. It drops towards the rear of the car and we've extended the line with a long overhang. This enhances the feeling of speed and agility and gives the new Qashqai a more dynamic look."



Smart Premium

Nissan's philosophy of accessible technology can be seen and touched everywhere in the new Qashqai. From the interior materials and controls to the exterior details, every area has been designed to make full use of available technologies.

By establishing the available technologies and features at the very start of the design process, the team at NDE were able to integrate all the key features into the car. As a result, all the Qashqai's technologies are perfectly integrated into the finished design and work effortlessly with the rest of the car.

"Technology doesn't have a specific form or shape," explains Taisuke Nakamura. "To express technology in the exterior design was a big challenge for us. Everyone has a different impression about technology, so how do you this through styling?"

The key to integrating technology was to work with it from the start. Darryl Scriven: "The LED headlamps are a great example of how we've integrated advanced technology into the new Qashqai. "We initially started out wanting to use the same bezel as the standard light. But we didn't think it showcased the technology as well as it could do, so we completely redesigned the bezel for the LED headlight. It's a beautiful element of the car with some incredibly complex geometric lines and shapes."


Nakamura's team also worked hard to develop the Qashqai's premium feel with a range of styling devices usually found on more expensive luxury models. But as with the Qashqai's technology features, the team was passionate about integrating them into the design at an early stage.

"Premium touches such as chrome trim around the windows were part of the design from the start. You can't just add these at the end and hope it looks premium," says Darryl Scriven. "Details are the key to the premium feel. Look at the panel gaps and areas where three panels with different materials meet. These processes take a very long time to perfect, but the difference to the finished car is massive."

One particular area where the design team invested considerable time is the clamshell bonnet - a highly complex pressing that presented Nissan's engineering and manufacturing teams with a number of challenges. "The panel gaps you get with a clamshell bonnet are three dimensional and were very hard to get it right," Darryl Scriven recalls. "We could have taken the easy option of having a flat bonnet with just two dimensional panel gaps, but that didn't give us the premium feel we were looking for. It was a huge task for the engineers, but the end result is incredible."

In Control

Control is a theme that runs throughout the new Qashqai's design. From the driver-focused interior and seating position to the exterior design, every element has been crafted to give passengers and owners a feeling of security and control.


"To create a feeling of security purely with design is difficult, so it was a real challenge for us at the start," explains Taisuke Nakamura. "We knew from early in the process that we wanted to increase the wheel size. Designing the car with larger wheels emphasises the feeling of driving capability, and that imparts a sense of security with the driver. We really pushed for this at the start." As a result, Tekna versions of the new Qashqai are fitted with 19-inch alloy wheels as standard.

To further enhance the confident personality of the new car, key details such as the front and rear lights came under intense design scrutiny, as Darryl Scriven explains: "We wanted the Qashqai to be instantly recognisable at a distance - whatever the lighting conditions. The rear combilamp and headlight follows the boomerang design theme - a core element of Nissan's new design language which gives sharp impression by adding clear direction for the illumination. With so many others competing in this area of the market, you need a powerful visual signature that works day and night."


Giving Qashqai passengers a feeling of control and security inside was another priority for the NDE design team, as Taisuke Nakamara explains: "The main instrument panel is a major element of the new design. Visually, it expands the width of the cockpit and flows into the door design. This creates a focus point at the centre for all the important displays and makes passengers feel protected by the car. To emphasise this feeling of protection, the lower section of the dashboard features padded panels, along with additional pads on the centre console for the knees."

In 2013, against the background of a generally depressed European market, although now with signs of stabilisation, and overseas markets showing contrasting trends, PEUGEOT recorded 1,553,000 sales worldwide.

Successful launches

2013 saw the PEUGEOT Brand continue the renewal and expansion of its product range.

The PEUGEOT 208 will soon pass 600,000 units produced in Europe and Brazil since its launch in 2012.

In 2013, 208 strengthened its position on the podium in the hotly contested European B2 hatchback segment, particularly in France, Belgium & Luxembourg, Holland, Portugal, and Denmark.

In spring 2013, the 208 range was topped by two new additions, the 208 XY and 208 GTi, which accounted for nearly 9,500 orders by the end of December and nearly a third of 208 customers have chosen the top trim levels (Féline, XY and GTi).

The PEUGEOT 208 also gained success in race car competitions: victory and record broken with the 208 T16 Pikes Peak at the iconic American hill climb race, triple win with the 208 GTi Peugeot Sport in its category in the 24 Hours at Nürburgring and the launches of private racing versions (208 R2, 208 Racing Cup Circuit and 208 T16).


The PEUGEOT 2008 Urban Crossover, with more than 82,000 customer orders since its launch in spring 2013, saw a level of success above its objective in the rapidly expanding CUV category of the B segment.

The strong appeal of the 2008, confirmed by several awards received in Europe, has led to an increase in production capacity at Mulhouse, progressively brought up to 650 units a day.

Qualitative success has also been achieved, with a particularly high trim level mix: 69 % of orders in Europe have been for trim levels 3 & 4 in the 2008 range, against an initial objective of 48 %.

2008’s international development will be realised by its sales launch in China during 2014, then in Brazil in 2015.

At the end of December and after less than three months on sale more than 35,000 orders were received for the new PEUGEOT 308 and that is even before its launch in the UK and various other overseas markets. This latest new car has seen a level of success above the ambitious targets that had been set for it.

With a model mix of more than 50% for trim levels 3 & 4 (Allure & Féline), it also demonstrates that all of the Brand’s models are contributing towards PEUGEOT’s move up-market.

Having already won several awards (France, Switzerland, Spain, Croatia, Slovakia), the new 308 is also one of the 7 finalists for the prestigious 2014 “Car of the Year” Award.

To its many qualities, the new 308 adds safety at the very highest level, as shown by the 5 * rating recently obtained under the new EuroNCAP tests.

In the spring, the new 308 range will expand with a new body style (SW) and new particularly innovative powertrains, such as the 1.6l BlueHDi and the brand new 1.2l THP and a new automatic gearbox.


The new PEUGEOT 301 gave the Brand a new model to conquest in emerging markets (93 % of sales are outside Europe) and with production and sales recently started in China, more than 67,000 examples were sold in 2013.

It made its mark especially in Algeria and Turkey. In 2014, the PEUGEOT 301 will contribute towards the growth of the Brand with a sales volume of 130,000 cars worldwide (of which, 65,000 in China).

PEUGEOT’s move up-market at the heart of the strategy for the brand

In 2013, with 338,000 units, ‘Premium’ vehicles represented 22 % of total sales for the Brand, against 18 % in 2012.

Among those, 89,000 PEUGEOT 508 vehicles were sold, in its internal combustion and HYbrid4 versions, 30 % of which were in China.

The 3008/3008 HYbrid 4 Crossover won 141,000 customers, especially in Europe and in China, while 74,000 examples of the 2008 Urban Crossover have been delivered.

For its part, the RCZ, with the range extended by the radical R version developed by Peugeot Sport, attracted more than 9,200 customers, while the Coupé Cabriolets and the 4008 SUV sold 14,500 and 9,100 units respectively.

Emissions reduction a top priority

PEUGEOT’s environmental commitment can be seen in the figures for 2013: the offering of three HYbrid 4 models, the optimisation of petrol and HDi engines, the extension of the new generation 3-cylinder petrol engines (1.2l VTi) through the range and the wide implementation of Stop & Start e-HDi have allowed the Brand to reduce the weighted average emissions of its European range to 115.2 g/km CO2 (11 months of 2013), against 121.6 g/km CO2 in 2012.

PEUGEOT is continuing its efforts towards the objective of 141.24mpg by 2020: developed in cooperation with TOTAL, the 208 HYbrid FE technology demonstrator explores various solutions and achieves the feat of reducing its emissions to 46 g/km CO2 (123.8mpg).

Europe: PEUGEOT gives preference to profitable sales

Against the background of a European car & light commercial vehicle market that remains competitive on price, down slightly by 1.6 % and on track towards stabilisation during the second half, PEUGEOT adopted a sound commercial approach in 2013 by choosing more profitable channels of distribution.

However, PEUGEOT improved its performance in Europe during 2013 compared to 2012: down by 11.7 % in the first quarter, its registrations then recovered over the year to finish 3.5 % up in the fourth quarter.

The Brand achieved 897,000 registrations (743,000 cars and 154,000 light commercial vehicles), down by 6.1 %, for a market share of 6.5 %, against 6.8 % the year before.

This change reflects an unfavourable market mix, against the background of persistent weakness in the large southern European markets, traditionally the most important for the Brand.

In 2013 the Brand recorded an increased market share for cars & light commercial vehicles in several countries in the area – particularly in France, Portugal and Ireland – and increased volumes in the United Kingdom, Spain and Portugal. It should be noted that in Spain, PEUGEOT shares the leadership of the total overall market and is the undisputed forerunner in the LCV market.

In Central and Eastern Europe, in the context of a market that had stabilised globally, PEUGEOT saw its registrations increase by 6.3 %, with noticeable increases for the main markets in the region (Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland, Slovakia).

In the European LCV market, PEUGEOT maintained its strong position with a quasi-stable market share of 10.5%.

Strong progress in overseas markets

With 673,000 assembled vehicles, the percentage of PEUGEOT’S sales outside Europe jumped from 39 to 43 %, in line with the Brand’s objective of achieving 50 % of its sales outside Europe by 2015.

2013 demonstrated the Brand’s acceleration in nearly all of the major regions in the world showing growth.

In China the biggest vehicle market in the world, PEUGEOT is outperforming with vehicle registrations growth of 25.8 % (+ 19 % for the market), at 272,000 units and a market share of 1.8% (1.7% in 2012).

PEUGEOT is reaping the rewards of an ambitious product policy (two launches in 2014 : 3008 China and 301), the development of its Dealer network (540 Dealers at the end of 2013), its rigorous approach to Chinese customers (Number 1 in the JD Power China classification for after sales service quality) and the development of new power units (e-Power).

In Latin America (Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Mexico) PEUGEOT registrations grew by 4.6% in a market up 2.9% albeit with contrasting results across the region.

In Argentina with 98,300 registrations, an increase of 21.6% - nearly double that of the market - PEUGEOT achieved a new historical record.

The successful launch of the PEUGEOT 208 should be noted in particular, on sale from summer 2013 and already in 2nd place in a B segment (second half), which accounts for 65 % of the Argentine market.

In Chile PEUGEOT’s registrations saw growth of 33.1 %, to 12,000 units, in a market up 10.3 %

In Mexico registrations grew by 33.4 %, to 6,900 units, widely outperforming the increase in the market (+ 7.9 %).

In Brazil on the other hand, in difficult economic circumstances and a very strained vehicle market, the PEUGEOT 208, launched during the year, has not yet made it possible for the Brand to return to growth. PEUGEOT sold 57,500 vehicles, down by 20.2 % in a market itself also slightly down (-1.5 %).

In Russia where the market contracted by 5.4% in 2013, the Brand decided to restrict its sales, profitability being seriously impacted by a very unfavourable Euro-Rouble exchange rate. Against this rather special context, PEUGEOT registrations in Russia reached 33,900 units in 2013, down by 23.8%.

On the other hand, sales were up 26.3% (5,400 units) in Ukraine, in a market that is also down.

In the Mediterranean region, success has been achieved.

In Algeria in a market going through a period of slight consolidation (-1.5 %), PEUGEOT established a new sales record, at 74,400 registrations (+ 12.1 %), a result helped by the success of the new PEUGEOT 301. The Brand, market leader for the first time in ten years, recorded a penetration of 17.0% (15 % in 2012).

Finally, in Turkey thanks also to the warm welcome given to the PEUGEOT 301, the Brand saw its registrations grow by 15.1 % in 2013, to 34,000 units (+ 9.8 % for the market).

IRELAND - AUDI remains #1 premium brand for 5th year.

Audi is Ireland's most popular premium brand for the fifth consecutive year

Audi Ireland today announced total sales figures for 2013 of 3,687 units ensuring a record Irish market share of 5%. An increase in both sales volume and market share year-on-year cement Audi as Ireland’s number one premium car brand for the fifth year running.


Despite the total car market being down 7% in 2013, Audi’s unrivalled product development and continued investment in its dealer network has ensured sustained growth of 1%.

Christian Gussen, Managing Director of Audi Ireland commented; “2013 was another successful year at Audi Ireland and we are delighted that Audi remains the number one premium car brand of choice for Irish motorists for the fifth year in a row and we sold over one third of all premium cars in Ireland last year.


“Our continued success can be attributed to the strength of our product portfolio. For example look at the strong performance of the sleeker, sportier and more fuel efficient Audi A3, the new saloon and sportback models playing a significant role in our success this year with an increase in sales of over 60% for this model. Great product is supported by unrivalled customer service and flexible finance solutions.

“2014 will be another challenging year for the Irish motor industry but our early signs are positive and we look forward to starting the new 141 registration period with increased momentum behind us.”

  • Audi Q5 finishes as the best selling model for Audi in the US in 2013; strong demand seen throughout product lineup in 2013

Audi achieved its fourth-consecutive year of record U.S. demand by recording full-year sales of 158,061, a 13.5% increase over the previous annual record set a year earlier.
In addition, Audi set an all-time monthly sales record in December 2013 with sales of 17,013 new models, a 14.6% improvement over the previous monthly sales record set in December 2012. The most recent month also stands as the first time Audi monthly sales have ever topped 15,000 vehicles. December 2013 was also established the 36th consecutive monthly sales record for Audi in the U.S. market.

“After 36 consecutive record sales months, 2013 was another year to thank America for embracing Audi,” said Mark Del Rosso, Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer, Audi of America. “These record results show the payoff from our longstanding strategy to build the Audi brand through exciting products, committed dealer partners and a sustainable business model.”

December results were bolstered by sales of Audi luxury SUVs, with a record month for the Audi Q5 crossover posting a 32.2% gain in December with 4,794 units delivered for the month. Sales of the Audi Q7 increased 52.6% to 2,279 vehicles sold for the month. Year-to-date sales for the Audi Q5 increased 40.8% to a total of 40,355 vehicles sold for the year, while YTD sales for the Audi Q7 increased 45.1% to a total of 15,978 vehicles.

Through December, sales of the Audi A6, A7, A8 and Q7 made up one of every three models the brand sold. That compares to a 19% mix for the most exclusive models just four years ago.


Luxury sedan sales remain strong as the Audi A6 increased 43.3% to 2,686 vehicles sold for the month, while YTD sales increased 18.1% to 22,428 vehicles sold.

There has been high demand for the updated 2014 Audi R8 models, including the Audi R8 V8, Audi R8 V10 and Audi R8 V10 plus. Customers have responded well to the changes in the vehicle’s transmission showing an increase of sales to 37.3% MTD.

December 2013 was also the top sales result for Audi Certified pre-owned vehicles sales with an increase of 21.1% for the month, to a total of 4,022 vehicles. For the full year, Audi CPO sales increased 10.2% to a total of 40,190 vehicles, also an all-time record for Audi of America.

  • • Sales of Audi premium category vehicles (Audi A6, Audi A7, Audi A8, and Audi Q7) increased 19.2% YTD, representing 33.7% of total Audi sales year-to-date and 46% of the Audi year-to-date sales gain.
  • • Sales mix for Audi S performance variants finished the month at 16.1% for the S4 sedan; 39.7% for the S5/ RS 5; 4.6% for the S6; 26.1% for the S7 and RS 7; 10.2% for the S8; 27% for the TTS / TT RS and TTS Roadster, and 8.6% for the SQ5 crossover. 
  • • Sales of Audi A6 increased 43.3% compared to December 2012; YTD sales grew 18.1% compared to previous period.
  • • Sales of the Audi Q5 increased 32.2% compared to December 2012; YTD sales grew 40.8% compared to previous period.

Stunning A1 crossover concept to debut at NAIAS in Detroit

Agile, compact and versatile: The new Audi show car is making its debut in January 2014 at the North American International Auto Show (NAIAS) in Detroit. The two-door model with its high ground clearance is a crossover with a distinctly sporting slant – a car for all roads and tracks, for everyday driving and recreational use.

The show car is a systematic development of the Audi design language. It combines a host of visual elements from future models with the Audi-typical allroad concept and independent “Shooting Brake”
body style.

Measuring 4.20 metres in length, the show car has a powerful road stance. Precise and clearly drawn lines as well as geometric surfaces are combined to create a sculpted, clear design form. It is almost as if the outer skin of the two-door car has been modelled from a solid piece, from the Singleframe grille and striking side tornado line to the taut, coupé-like rear. The overhangs are short; the roof line is low and it ends in a strong C pillar. The pronounced horizontal body line and the large 19-inch wheels emphasise the impression of concentrated energy.

The show car is a compelling blend of form and function. The characteristic allroad design features serve to seemingly contract its dimensions visually while also underscoring its offroad character. The aluminium underbody guards at front and rear emphasize the width and protect the car off road.

Design elements that are typical of e-tron models, such as the ribs in the Singleframe grille and in the side air inlets, fit in harmoniously with the overall design concept. The dual headlights and the honeycomb-structured Singleframe grille indicate the further development of the quattro design language which Audi already presented with its Sport quattro concept show car in September of this year at the International Motor Show (IAA) in Frankfurt.

Suzuki offers decent PCP rates on new SX4 S-Cross

Suzuki has some good news this winter for customers looking to purchase a new SX4 S-Cross, the brand’s all new Crossover model.

Launched in October, the SX4 S-Cross is available from £14,999 for the SZ3 1.6-litre petrol model with manual transmission and Suzuki is offering some very competitive PCP (Personal Contract Plan) and PCH (Personal Contract Hire) rates to help new car buyers looking for the best payment option to suit them.


Taking the SZ3 model as an example with its high standard specification of seven airbags, cruise control with speed limiter, air conditioning, 1­6-inch alloy wheels and Daytime Running Lights, Suzuki is offering a low rate PCP of 4.9 per cent APR over a 43 month period until the end of this year with payments of just £189 per month.

Move up the range to the SZ4 with Dual Zone automatic air conditioning, Bluetooth connectivity, front fog lamps and rear privacy glass as standard and payments are just £10 per month extra over the same term.

Retained value is positive too as established Trade publication Glass’s Guide has listed an average residual value across the S-Cross range of 41 per cent after three years and 60,000 miles. Lower mileage owners can be ensured of an even higher retained figure when it comes to replacing the car.

Personal Contract Hire is always a good option for Business Users and Suzuki Financial Services is offering a headline low rate plan of £179 per month for the SZ-T model over 42 months with a deposit of six monthly payments required. SZ-T is an ideal choice as it offers an even higher standard specification including Satellite navigation, DAB radio, rear parking camera and polished 17-inch alloy wheels.

With regards to safety, SX4 S-Cross is one of the best new cars on the market after the recent NCAP tests with five stars awarded overall and strong scores of 92 per cent for Adult occupancy protection, 80 per cent for Child occupancy protection and 72 per cent for Pedestrian protection which was the highest score amongst any current competitor Crossover.

It is an ideal choice for families as it offers seating for five, luggage capacity of 430 litres and a low cost of ownership with CO2 emissions of 127g/km 1.6-litre petrol (manual transmission) and just 110g/km for the 1.6-litre DDiS model.

Real World fuel economy has been commented as ‘exceptional’ by several of the Automotive magazines with this week’s Auto Express voting it second place in their Top Ten most efficient cars tested in 2013, the S-Cross DDiS achieved an average consumption of 59.6mpg.

The Land Rover LR2 compact luxury SUV offers the brand's renowned off-road capability in a vehicle that provides outstanding on-road ride comfort and agility. The combination of full-time intelligent four-wheel drive and the renowned Land Rover Terrain Response® control system3 give the LR2 the ability to take trails unsuitable for some luxury crossovers.

Following a model year that saw the Land Rover LR2 get a new powertrain, revised styling, upgraded interior and enhanced navigation system, the brand's high-capability entry model adds a new, more versatile infotainment system and improved Satellite Radio for 2014. In addition, the LUX Package for the LR2 HSE model includes the 825-watt Meridian™ Surround Sound System with 16 speakers and subwoofer and it is now available as a standalone option for the LR2 and LR2 HSE models.


The Land Rover LR2 deftly blends performance and efficiency. Its 2-liter direct-injection turbocharged engine delivers 240hp and 250 lb.-ft. of torque, the latter at low engine speed, and is teamed to a six-speed automatic CommandShift® automatic transmission. This transmission is coupled to a full-time four-wheel drive system featuring a HaldexTM rear axle coupling. The powertrain components and systems are protected from water intrusion, providing the vehicle with a 19.7-inch water wading depth3.

Standard amenities in the LR2 include grained leather seating with an eight-way power driver's seat and six-way power front passenger seat, along with a dual-panel panoramic sunroof.

POWERTRAIN

A turbocharged, direct injected 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine debuted in the Land Rover LR2 for 2013, offering more power and torque than the 3.2-liter inline-six it replaced while consuming less fuel. This engine delivers 240hp at 5500 rpm and 250 lb.-ft. of torque at 3200 rpm, providing a broad power band for strong low-speed response.

The 2.0-liter engine first appeared in the 2012 Range Rover Evoque and features advanced technologies such as high-pressure direct fuel injection and variable valve timing.  A high efficiency turbocharger delivers rapid response, and a fabricated steel exhaust manifold promotes quick catalytic converter light-off. Twin balance shafts ensure smooth operation, and piston rings and tappets have been coated to reduce friction.

All LR2 models are equipped with Intelligent Power System Management (IPSM), which features Smart Regenerative Charging. Where possible, the alternator charges the battery only when the vehicle is decelerating, recovering kinetic energy rather than consuming energy during engine operation.

The engine is paired with an Aisin AWF21 six-speed automatic transmission engineered with advanced neutral logic control to reduce internal drag when the LR2 is idling. The transmission also features a remote breather, routed above the vehicle's water wading depth (19.7 inch / 500 mm). In sport mode, the transmission is programmed to hold low gears longer and to downshift more readily, to assist acceleration.  CommandShift® allows manual sequential gearshifts.

INTERIOR AND ELECTRONICS

The 2014 Land Rover LR2 and LR2 HSE models come with grained leather covered seats as standard, while the LR2 HSE LUX gets an upgraded Windsor leather covered seat with double contrast stitch. The standard dual-panel panoramic sunroof provides a bright and airy feel in the cabin; the front section opens and slides over the second-row glass roof panel. With Passive Start, the engine starts at the touch of a button as long as the key is somewhere inside the car.

The driver can control the standard Meridian™ audio system and the optional satellite navigation system through the standard 7-inch color touch-screen2. For 2014, the screen uses capacitive technology, which is more responsive than the resistive touch system used before. The screen provides improved scrolling on the main navigation screen (when equipped) and QWERTY keyboard for phonebook searching.2

A 5-inch screen between the main dials within the instrument cluster displays primary vehicle-related information, such as temperature and fuel levels, gear position and Terrain Response® mode. Steering wheel toggle switches operate clear drop-down menus and vehicle setup details.

The LR2 HSE is equipped with a rear view camera, which shows the view from the back of the vehicle on the infotainment screen along with dynamic lines representing the boundaries of the vehicle and the predicted path as the vehicle reverses3. The system also incorporates 'Hitch Assist,' a graphic superimposed on the camera showing the position of the tow ball3.

The available hard disc drive navigation system comes with such features as ECO Route planning, Dynamic Zoom, Visual Lane guidance, POI (Point of Interest) management and repeat TMC traffic guidance2. A 'Say What You See' voice activation system will prompt the driver visually with the commands he or she needs to speak in order to control functions in the audio, optional satellite navigation, and phone systems2. The prompts are displayed in an easy-to-follow 'step by step' format on the screen.

Meridian™ Sound Systems

Two Meridian™ audio systems are available on the 2014 LR2. Standard in the LR2 and LR2 HSE, the first system offers 380 Watts of power delivered via an 11-speaker system that delivers exceptional stereo sound. Included with the HSE LUX and also available as a standalone option for the others, the 825-Watt surround sound 17-speaker system with Trifield™ technology provides a natural, enveloping, concert-like experience for all occupants. Both Meridian™ systems are equipped with subwoofers for a deep, bass sound and an Audyssey MultEQ audio tuning system.

There is also a 3.5mm auxiliary input jack for music players and Bluetooth® audio streaming from any supporting devices2.  HD Radio™ and SiriusXM Satellite Radio™ are also available.

DRIVING DYNAMICS

The LR2 combines agile and refined on-road behavior with legendary Land Rover off-road ability, thanks in large part to its four-wheel independent suspension. The responsive rack-and-pinion steering is direct and fluid, with just 2.6 turns lock-to-lock. Rigidly mounted to the front sub-frame to improve lateral stiffness, the steering column is adjustable for reach and rake.

Off-road capability for the Land Rover LR2 starts with 8.26-inch (210 mm) minimum of ground clearance that can overcome rocky, sandy, rutted or muddy terrain. The LR2 is rated to tow a 3500lbs. (1585 kg) braked trailer. The standard 18-inch alloy wheels are fitted with all-terrain tires.

FOUR WHEEL DRIVE SYSTEM

The intelligent full-time all-wheel drive system was developed in conjunction with HaldexTM, whose acclaimed center-coupling technology continuously alters the front-rear torque split through a hydraulically operated multi-plate wet clutch. In effect, the coupling gives the proactive engagement benefits of all-wheel drive and the efficiency and fuel economy of an on-demand system.

A high-pressure pre-charge pump pressurizes the hydraulics in the center coupling as soon as the engine is started, allowing for all-wheel drive from rest to reduce wheelspin from standing starts. On the move, the front-rear torque split adapts continuously to suit changing conditions. The system engages quickly when traction loss is detected and can disengage quickly to optimize the response of the stability control systems. Only a small amount of torque is fed to the rear wheels under normal conditions, such as on a straight paved road, but in low traction or off-road situations, almost all of the engine torque can instantaneously be delivered to the rear wheels, if required. The HaldexTM unit can achieve full torque transmission in just 150 milliseconds, engaging within 15 degrees of wheel-slip rotation.

TERRAIN RESPONSE® AND OFF-ROAD DRIVING SYSTEMS

The Terrain Response® system3 is one of the core Land Rover technologies that gives the LR2 its outstanding range of capabilities. It optimizes drivability and traction by adapting the responses of the vehicle's engine, transmission, center coupling and chassis systems to match the demands of the terrain.

Terrain Reponse® is a fully integrated system that manages:

  • Engine Management
  • Transmission Control
  • Electronic Traction Control and Anti-lock Brakes: These slip and braking control systems are all adjusted and tuned by Terrain Response to offer optimum grip, braking power and safety on the chosen terrain3
  • Dynamic Stability Control (DSC): DSC is designed to stop torque to a wheel after loss of traction, but in some off-road situations torque feed is still desirable, even when traction is compromised3. Terrain Response® automatically adjusts DSC so that appropriate torque is maintained
  • Center Coupling

The driver can choose from four Terrain Response® settings via buttons on the center console:

  • General Driving: provides a broad span of ability suitable for most on-road driving
  • Grass/Gravel/Snow: for slippery conditions, on-road or off-road
  • Mud and Ruts
  • Sand
Terrain Response® changes the setting of the electronically controlled HaldexTM coupling to optimize
all-wheel drive in difficult conditions. Each Terrain Response® program applies different transmission shift mappings; the Transmission Control Module also manages torque converter lock-up, which has different requirements depending on the selected Terrain Response®mode.

Hill Descent Control (HDC®) also plays major role in off-road driving3. Using the anti-lock brake system, HDC® automatically restricts speed downhill and improves driver control on slippery descents. HDC® is automatically engaged on appropriate Terrain Response® programs, with the downhill speed rate varying according to which surface is selected.

Another innovation on Land Rover LR2 is the brand's patented Gradient Release Control system3. Linked to HDC®, it ensures that when releasing the brakes on extremely steep hills, brake-line pressure is released progressively when the driver's foot is removed from the pedal, helping the driver maintain control.

The LR2 uses large vented four-wheel disc brakes. The 12.5-inch (316 mm) front discs are 'reverse vented,' so they draw cool air into the disc over the central bell, which is then vented out from the rim of the disc. This approach improves thermal stability under severe braking.

Rear brake discs are also substantial - 12-inch (302 mm) in diameter - and include an Electric Parking Brake that adjusts brake force according to the slope the vehicle is parked on. The system takes into account whether the brakes are hot or cold when the LR2 has been parked. If hot, the system 'wakes up' periodically to ensure clamping force is not lost as the brakes cool down. The electric parking brake may still be used as an emergency brake, automatically selecting the most stable braking method by employing skid prevention techniques. An additional safety feature prevents the brake from being released unless the drivers' seat is occupied.

The braking system also includes Electronic Brake-force Distribution (EBD) and Emergency Brake Assist (EBA), the latter boosting pedal pressure when full braking is required. Corner Brake Control (CBC) enhances rear-end stability when braking in corners and also helps to control the Hill Descent Control, Electronic Traction Control and Dynamic Stability Control systems3.

Roll Stability Control uses gyroscopic sensing to compare the rate of change of body roll angle with the steered course3. If necessary, incremental brake force is applied to specific wheels to reduce the chances of a roll.

DESIGN

As always with a Land Rover, functionality is a fundamental driver of design for the LR2. The narrow

A-pillars help provide excellent all-round visibility. The pronounced hood edges help the driver place the vehicle accurately on the road or trail. The wheel stance and wide track help deliver agile handling and surefooted grip. The short front and rear overhangs and high underbody are essential for off-road performance, maximizing approach and departure angles. Both front and rear light systems utilize LED technology.

The LR2 HSE grille insert bars, fender vent and rear finisher strip have a light gloss silver finish, with the grille surround finished in gloss black. There are 18-inch, 10-spoke alloy wheels as standard and two 19-inch wheel options. Two new colors that have been added to the LR2 range for 2014: Zanzibar is a new metallic copper, and Loire Blue replaces Baltic Blue.

BODY STRUCTURE

The LR2 uses unibody construction. Ultra-high-strength steel is used extensively in the door beams and for various strengthening reinforcements. DP600 dual-phase steel - which requires special pressing because of its strength - is used for the A-pillars, lower sills, roof supports, front side members and dash. Even the hood-locking platform has been designed to help boost structural integrity, ensuring good load transfer from one front crash rail to the other.

The LR2 uses 100 percent double-sided zinc-coated steel panels as part of the sophisticated anti-corrosion and paint treatment. Vulnerable areas of the vehicle, including the sills and lower doors, are coated in a tough thermoplastic cladding.  A double bulkhead in the engine bay improves powertrain isolation and provides a clean area for components such as the ABS modulator, brake booster and windshield wiper system. The radiator is protected by a strong polymer undertray, while a structural steel undertray protects the engine.

SAFETY

Responsive handling, large four-wheel disc brakes and full-time all-wheel drive system help the driver avoid hazards. Another key to safety is maintaining excellent visibility under all conditions.  The high 'command view' seating position provides visibility over traffic and a clear view of the road3.

The generous glass area offers excellent all-around views. Large door mirrors offer a wide field of view. Rain-sensing wipers and automatic headlights, both of which work via infrared sensor technology, are standard on all models. An electrically heated front windshield and heated washer jets are available to maintain visibility in low temperature conditions.

Passive safety starts with the strong unibody and its passenger cell.  Front and rear crumple zones are designed to help absorb as much energy as possible during an impact. Side-impact protection is further supported by the ultra-high-strength steel door beams, the strong and deep door sills and the raised seat position.

All LR2 models feature seven airbags including front-seat side airbags protect against side impacts and
full-length curtain airbags in the roof side structure6. An inflatable knee bolster helps protect the driver against leg injury.

Pedestrian safety is also a high priority, with 2.76-3.54-inch (70mm-90mm) of clearance between the upper hood and under-hood components in the critical zones. The excellent energy absorbing qualities of the hood further assist pedestrian protection.

With Nissan’s trademark innovation and excitement at its core, the new Qashqai has been unveiled during a thrilling 3D social media digital mapping show in London, UK, signalling the start of the second generation of crossovers. Representing a small yet significant sample of Qashqai drivers from across the world, more than 2,500 people submitted images representing the best of technology innovation. These images then came together to form the shape of the all-new Qashqai, revealing its design to the world for the first time today.

Nissan Safety Shield is a collection of features designed to enhance the safety of occupants in line with Nissan’s ongoing vision towards zero accidents, a sentiment underlined by the company’s commitment to produce commercially viable autonomous vehicles by 2020.

In the new Qashqai, Safety Shield technologies include the following features:

Front Collision Avoidance

By scanning the road ahead using a built-in radar system, the Qashqai delivers three levels of assistance. First is an audible warning, alerting the driver if the gap to the car in front is closing.


Secondly, if the driver does not react, the brakes are automatically partially applied. Finally if the gap is still closing, the brakes will be applied fully to bring the car to a complete stop if necessary.

Driver Attention Support

The new Qashqai gets to know you so that it can tell when you are getting drowsy. After taking around 10 minutes to ‘learn’ your driving style, the Nissan Safety Shield will monitor driving inputs, showing a dashboard alert if steering becomes erratic, indicating the driver should take a break.

Traffic Sign Recognition

Helping new Qashqai drivers to both stay safe and within the law, speed limit signs are automatically read by the front-facing camera and displayed to the driver. This function works across Europe, regardless of national sign typography. It even recognises that some countries enforce a weather dependent lower speed limit if it’s raining, so both dry and wet weather limits are displayed to the driver.


Lane Departure Warning

A great feature for multi-lane highways, Lane Departure Warning detects if the car is starting to drift out of lane. Advanced computer programming detects even faint road markings allowing the Qashqai to determine if it is drifting out of position. If it does, and the driver has not operated the indicators, a warning is given to the driver to correct their road position.

Blind Spot Warning

Nissan's system uses the rear view Around View Monitor camera to detect vehicles in the hidden blind spot areas on both sides of the Qashqai. If a vehicle is detected in either blind spot, a discreet warning light illuminates in the glass of the door mirror. If the driver indicates to change lanes and the system detects a vehicle in the danger area, the light flashes and an audible warning is given.


Moving Object Detection

The Qashqai is available with front and rear parking sensors which deliver audible warnings to the driver when manoeuvring as well as a visual display via the Qashqai’s dashboard combimeter. On top of this functionality, the Qashqai also benefits from an enhanced version of the existing model’s Around View Monitor ‘helicopter view’ parking aid. When stationary, if something moves into the area covered by the four cameras the system will give an audible warning and highlight the area in which the moving object is detected. Mounted on the tailgate and having a fish-eye lens, the rear wide view AVM camera has a sweep of vision in excess of 180 degrees, giving it an unparalleled field of vision at the back of the car. Images from the camera are displayed on the new, larger seven-inch NissanConnect screen.

High Beam Assist

A high resolution camera combined with advanced software has led to a sophisticated automatic high and low headlight beam function for the new Qashqai. The system optimises the use of the headlamps in order to provide the maximum amount of light possible for any driving scenario.

Chassis Control

Using Nissan’s very latest ride and handling know-how, Chassis Control enhances both ride and handling, learning from the development of the GT-R supercar and delivering the functionality of a Limited Slip Differential. While the Vehicle Dynamic Control system (VDC) continues to correct severe traction loss, at lower speeds with lower forces the Active Trace Control applies specific braking force to each wheel to correct the course of the Qashqai when cornering, giving a more dynamic feel without interfering with the driving experience. What’s more, when driving over undulating surfaces, Active Ride Control applies subtle braking to individual wheels to deliver flatter body control enhancing comfort for all occupants.

Intelligent Parking Assist

Automatically measuring the size of an available parallel parking space, Nissan’s Intelligent Parking Assist requires only 80cm space in addition to the length of the Qashqai to be able to automatically steer the car safely into position. All the driver has to do is follow the on-screen instructions and control forward and reverse drive. The system can also park in car park bays, with the driver benefiting from the helicopter view provided by AVM to guide them through the process.


New NissanConnect

In-keeping with new Qashqai’s appetite for innovation, the new crossover will be the first model to go on sale with the new NissanConnect system. Now with a seven-inch touchscreen, NissanConnect has evolved to offer Smartphone connectivity to keep owners in touch with the outside world wherever their journey takes them. In the future it will have access to a range of apps covering music, social networking, entertainment and travel through a large, seven-inch colour touch screen. The new NissanConnect builds upon the recently introduced Google® search and Send To Car functions, which allow drivers to plan a trip at home.

The system includes Bluetooth audio streaming and mobile phone integration as well as Aux-in and USB slots along with DAB radio.


In addition to the main NissanConnect screen, the driver also benefits from an additional display within the instrument panel. It’s one of the most advanced meter displays yet seen with a five-inch TFT colour display incorporating no fewer than 12 graphic displays accessible on rotation. Customisable to display different Qashqai body colours, the meter offers advice and warnings covering functions including average and actual speeds, fuel economy, turn-by-turn navigation instructions, audio content, traffic sign recognition, Nissan Safety Shield, Chassis Control, eco driving advice, as well as tyre pressure information and torque distribution settings in 4WD mode. Additionally, the driver can customise steering feel, lighting, auto light sensitivity, wiper and locking settings, plus drive computer contents.

DESIGN

The second-generation Qashqai sets a new benchmark for crossover design. Having defined the original crossover template in 2007, Nissan is taking the sector to a new level thanks to bold design, highly advanced engineering, intelligent technology and remarkable attention to detail.


New from the ground up, the new Qashqai is much more than just a rework of its ground-breaking predecessor. The second-generation model is 20mm wider, 49mm longer and 15mm lower than the current car. Yet despite this reduction in height, front and rear headroom levels have actually increased by 10mm and the raised driving position remains.

The new Qashqai features a striking new look with powerful curves, clean lines and intricate details including the option of 19-inch alloy wheels. Through bold new elements such as the raised bonnet line and muscular wheelarches, the new Qashqai conveys a feeling of dynamic strength.

All-LED headlamps

The Qashqai’s front end incorporates some of the most advanced technology ever offered in the crossover sector. All models feature LED daytime running lights, certain versions are equipped with even more sophisticated technology, with full LED power for both dip and main beam. In keeping with Nissan’s passion for delivering usable technology, the use of LED instead of Xenon is more than just a gimmick. The Qashqai’s LED headlamps produce a whiter, crisper light, not only using 50 per cent less power than Xenon bulbs, but also producing light closer in colour to sunlight resulting in better visibility at night. The lights also display Nissan’s unique LED lighting signature that sweeps up dramatically from the centre of the car.


Concealed technology

Integrating advanced technology can often prove a challenge for designers, but not so for the team responsible for the new Qashqai. By working closely with engineers, they were able to incorporate
new technology without compromising the car’s bold design. For example, while most manufacturers are content to incorporate their radar systems into ugly assemblies mounted in the bumper or front grille openings, Nissan has been able to relocate the Qashqai’s radar behind the bumper facia to give the car a smoother look.

Advanced aerodynamics with active elements

Nissan has always believed that form must match function, and this thinking has been taken to a new level with the second-generation Qashqai. Take, for example, the car’s aerodynamic profile. Not only does the new Qashqai deliver a dynamic and bold new look, it also cuts through the air with greater efficiency than ever before thanks to a drag co-efficient of 0.32. In creating the new Qashqai, the design and engineering teams studied every surface and detail. From the elements on show (such as the roof spoiler with winglets) to those hidden away (like the unique flat floor design), the Qashqai features some of the most advanced aerodynamic features to appear on a family car. The result is reduced drag, lower CO2 emissions, improved fuel consumption and greater stability at speed.


Another innovation making its debut on the Qashqai is an Active Grille Shutter system. This intelligent technology maximises the Qashqai’s aerodynamic efficiency by closing off airflow through the radiator when not needed. The grille shutter automatically shuts at speeds over 30kph and only opens if sensors detect that the engine needs cooling. The system will be fitted as standard on diesel-engined models with manual transmissions.

Interior – reinventing the way families travel

Comfort, connectivity and control: three of the core elements that underpin the design and layout of the new Qashqai’s cabin. Like the rest of the car, the Qashqai’s interior combines innovative technologies with common sense solutions to everyday challenges. With more experience in the crossover sector than any other marque, Nissan is in a unique position to set new practicality benchmarks for the next generation of crossover.

In creating new Qashqai’s cabin, Nissan’s design and engineering teams wanted to put the driver at the heart of the action. The car’s numerous comfort, convenience and safety systems have been analysed and redesigned to give the driver easy access to all key controls. Thanks to an intuitive single interface, drivers are able to perfectly tailor the Qashqai’s functions to their needs – from switching on three-flash indicators to adjusting how early the auto headlights switch on. Each menu and display is accurately and logically shown to the driver on the new meter display located between the analogue speedometer and tachometer and controlled by steering wheel mounted switches.


Even greater practicality

Versatility is another area where the new Qashqai excels. No area of the car’s interior was overlooked in the pursuit of increased flexibility and better practicality. The boot, for example, has a luggage capacity of 430 litres with the rear seats in position – an improvement of 20 litres over the outgoing Qashqai. This puts the new Qashqai even further ahead of its C-segment rivals – with the likes of the Ford Focus and Volkswagen Golf offering significantly less luggage space.

Passengers also enjoy more space in the new Qashqai, with improved head and leg room. The overall increase in width has allowed for greater shoulder room, while a full redesign of the door apertures means that getting in and out is easier than ever before.

Load space flexibility has also been improved with a tailgate that now opens 150mm higher and includes a dual-floor system designed to provide a flexible and versatile load space. The two reversible floor panels can easily be raised or lowered providing 16 possible configurations to either maximise luggage volume or provide a full flat floor with rear seats folded. Additionally the rear board easily slots into a vertical position providing an ideal sized space for carrying shopping bags. Furthermore the load cover fits neatly under the luggage floor allowing bulky items to be loaded. The luggage boards feature a wipe-clean surface on one side and soft carpet on the other, so muddy boots can be transported without fear of damaging the textile surfaces.

All-new seats – using science to minimise fatigue

A great cabin starts with great seats, and Nissan has worked hard to ensure that the second-generation Qashqai is even more comfortable for passengers. During the design stage, engineers used advanced medical scanning techniques and were inspired by NASA to analyse pressure and blood flow in the lower back of seated passengers. By redesigning elements and improving support in key areas, they were able to create a seat that offered even support. The highly advanced new Qashqai seat offers special support thanks to additional bolsters in the pelvis, lumbar and chest areas. The result is a seat that delivers long-distance comfort.

Taking attention to detail to a new level

Like any new Nissan, the Qashqai features numerous elements that will have passengers wondering, ‘why has nobody else thought of this?’ Take, for example, the centre console. Although having a USB port in the central box is nothing new, Nissan has created a channel for the wire – allowing passengers to operate their device outside the box without having to force the lid shut. Another example of Nissan’s common sense approach to design can be found on the cupholders. By making the cavities extra deep, bottles can be accommodated without getting in the way of the driver’s arm when changing gear. The use of an electronic parking brake also frees up valuable cabin space.


Passengers in the new Qashqai also benefit from a new ambient cabin lighting system, featuring a subtle orange mood light around the gearlever. Designed to give the cabin a premium look and feel when travelling at night, the lighting system is fully controllable by the driver and can easily be turned up, down or off altogether.

ENGINES AND TRANSMISSIONS

Combining conventional passenger car efficiency with the sense of adventure of an SUV has always been a key part of the appeal of crossovers. A range of supremely efficient and refined petrol and diesel engines allows the new Qashqai to exceed the expectations of drivers no matter which powertrain is chosen.

The line-up consists of four engines: two petrol and two diesel, with the option of two- or four-wheel-drive. Customers can also choose between manual and all-new Xtronic automatic transmissions.

Petrol

1.2 DIG-T 115PS (85kW)

Nissan believes that advanced technology should be available to all customers. The 1.2-litre DIG-T is an Alliance-developed engine tuned specifically by Nissan for the new Qashqai.

Driving through a six-speed manual transmission, this advanced turbocharged engine delivers 115PS (85kW) and generates 190Nm of torque. Despite its modest size, the 1.2-litre engine packs a real punch, offering sharper acceleration and greater flexibility than the outgoing 1.6-litre naturally aspirated engine.


Its lower weight and more fuel-efficient operation also means that the entry-level petrol Qashqai is considerably cleaner and more economical than the model it replaces. The 1.2 DIG-T engine emits 129g/km of CO2 (15g/km less than the outgoing 1.6-litre petrol unit), and has a fuel consumption figure of 50.4mpg .

Like all engines in the new Qashqai range, the 1.2 DIG-T is equipped with Start/Stop ignition as standard, and benefits from a raft of fuel-saving technologies, including a regenerative alternator, optimised gear ratios and special low-viscosity oils.

1.6 DIG-T 150PS (110kW)

Set to join the Qashqai range in the autumn of 2014, the most powerful petrol engine will be the 1.6 DIG-T engine, combining sharp performance with low emissions and remarkable fuel efficiency.

Tuned specifically for the Qashqai, this acclaimed engine features advanced turbocharging technology and a raft of additional features designed to maximise performance and economy.


With 240Nm of torque on offer, the 1.6 DIG-T delivers impressive low and mid-range pull, with excellent in-gear flexibility. Yet despite its strong performance, the range-topping petrol option retains impressive efficiency. Fuel consumption is 50.4mpg on the EU combined cycle, while CO2 emissions are 132g/km.

Diesel

1.5 dCi 110PS (81kW)

The latest evolution of the award-winning direct injection diesel engine is the cleanest and most fuel-efficient engine ever offered in a Qashqai with CO2 emissions of just 99g/km. Shared with Nissan’s Alliance Partner Renault, the sixth-generation 1.5-litre dCi unit is smoother, more efficient and more refined than the outgoing engine. Thanks to a substantial re-engineering programme, the 1.5-litre dCi engine offers greater in-gear flexibility thanks to a 20Nm increase in torque.

Major changes to the engine’s internals have also resulted in quieter operation and a reduction in vibration. Removal of the upper torque rod mount has eliminated a potential noise path from the engine to the cabin, while the overall weight of the unit has been reduced with new lightweight components.

The engine also features Nissan's automatic Start/Stop system, with highly efficient smart management technology that ensures the engine restarts within 0.5 seconds of the clutch being engaged. Reduced combustion noise further enhances the unit's overall refinement.

In terms of fuel consumption, the 1.5 dCi sets new standards in the crossover sector with an EU combined figure of just 74.3mpg.

1.6 dCi 130PS (96kW)

Positioned at the top of the Qashqai’s diesel range, the 1.6 dCi is offered with the option of two and four-wheel-drive. Jointly developed with Alliance partner Renault, this 130PS (96kW) unit is one of the most advanced diesel powerplants in its sector, with a number of technical innovations designed to maximise fuel consumption and reduce CO2 emissions.


Introduced on the current Qashqai, the 1.6 dCi engine is light, compact and strikes the perfect balance between strong performance and exceptional economy. Among the unit’s many innovations is a cold-loop, low-pressure exhaust gas recirculation system. By recycling the exhaust gas at a lower temperature, emissions of nitrogen oxides and CO2 are reduced.

Thermal management of the 1.6 dCi is also much more efficient with a reduced warm-up phase, reducing friction losses and fuel consumption.

In two-wheel-drive manual form, the 1.6 dCi has CO2 emissions of 115g/km and an EU combined fuel consumption figure of 64.2mpg. The Xtronic version emits 119g/km and returns 61.4mpg, while the four-wheel-drive manual version enjoys figures of 129g/km and 57.6mpg.

New Xtronic transmission

Developed specifically for the second-generation Qashqai, the new Xtronic transmission is available with the 1.6 dCi engine.

This highly advanced transmission is based on the principle of a constantly variable transmission, but has been engineered to deliver a smoother, more natural driving experience. Unlike conventional variable transmissions, the Qashqai’s Xtronic gearbox mimics the behaviour of traditional, multi-ratio automatic gearboxes during hard acceleration, with stepped changes. In more gentle driving, the ratios are subtly adjusted to give ultimate smoothness. This means the Xtronic transmission offers the best of both worlds for drivers, with ultra-smooth low-load power delivery and direct performance during higher acceleration driving.

DYNAMICS

Chassis

Underneath the new Qashqai’s sleek body is a new modular platform that has been tailored specifically for the second-generation crossover. The highly advanced, Alliance-developed structure is one of the most adaptable platform systems in existence, giving designers and engineers the opportunity to perfectly tailor the car to customer needs.

The vast majority of the new Qashqai’s upper body was designed and engineered in Europe. As a result, the new Qashqai feels perfectly at home on European roads, with ride and handling standards that exceed sector expectations in every area.

In terms of suspension layout, the new Qashqai features MacPherson struts at the front and one of two different designs at the rear. Two-wheel-drive models are equipped with an advanced twist beam design, while models fitted with ALL-MODE 4x4-i feature a multi-link system. The Qashqai’s suspension system has been developed in Europe to deliver the kind of smooth and responsive driving experience Nissan customers have come to expect.


As with the rest of the car, the new Qashqai features a host of engineering innovations designed to make life easier, more comfortable and more enjoyable for drivers and passengers.

Double piston shock absorbers

Creating a car with good low-speed ride and the ability to handle rough surfaces usually involves a compromise in set-up. Not so with the new Qashqai. The second generation model is equipped with advanced double-piston shock absorbers that deliver faultless damping at both ends of the dynamic range. The two channel system features a conventional channel that handles the kind of low-frequency bumps found on rough roads, and an additional channel that deals with the kind of small high-frequency bumps found on smoother roads. The end result is a car that delivers a smooth and refined ride whatever the road surface.

Next-generation power steering

During development stages of the Qashqai, every element of the car’s dynamic package was examined to see if improvements could be made. The steering, for example, has been completely redesigned and re-engineered, with a new Electronic Power Assisted Steering (EPAS) system introduced across the range.


The system has been tuned with a new control logic that delivers a more natural driving experience, thanks in part to a five per cent reduction in overall steering ratio to improve responsiveness.

Of course, creating a great steering system is more than just fine-tuning the assistance system. To help give the Qashqai an even more natural driving experience, and improve further straight line stability, the caster trail of the front suspension has been lengthened. By creating a longer caster trail, the front wheels have a more positive self-centring action, resulting in better feel through the steering wheel.

Your steering, how you like it

Nissan knows that different drivers like different levels of steering feedback. While some prefer a light feel that requires minimal effort, others like the heavier feedback normally associated with sportier cars. To meet these unique demands, Nissan has created a two-mode steering system that drivers can switch between, depending on their mood or preference.

In Normal mode, the Qashqai offers light responses that are perfectly suited to urban driving, low-speed manoeuvring and effortless cruising. In Sport mode, the EPAS system provides more feedback to the driver and requires more steering effort to turn.


ALL-MODE 4x4-i & Chassis Control

Drivers opting for the ALL-MODE 4x4-i transmission option benefit from one of the most advanced four-wheel-drive systems on the market, which is designed to offer maximum security and traction in all conditions.

The Chassis Control system on both two and four-wheel drive versions takes vehicle dynamics one step further combining three elements.

Active Ride Control monitors the wheel speed to detect undulations which could potentially upset the pitch of the car body and applies subtle braking to compensate.


Active Engine Brake, meanwhile, harnesses the power and controllability of the Xtronic transmission to add a degree of engine braking while cornering. The benefits are greater braking control and enhanced feel with less pedal effort along with less brake application when cornering and greater braking feel when coming to a stop.

Active Trace Control monitors the behaviour and trajectory of the car, and applies subtle braking to deliver a function similar to a Limited Slip Differential, providing the best traction and the least understeer. This highly intelligent system works seamlessly with the driver, to deliver an agile and secure driving experience.

Hill Start Assist

Pulling away on an incline is no longer a stressful operation thanks to a new system developed specifically for the new Qashqai. Hill Start Assist works with the car’s ESP system to ensure a fuss-free launch. By applying the brakes to all four wheels, the car is held stationary for two to three seconds when on an incline. The brakes are released when drive is fed through to the wheels.

Stunning Jaguar SUV (C-X17), new colour, makes this a stunning car.

Seeing the Jaguar C-X17 moving under its own steam really brings to the fore just how striking its design is.

The concept may be full of rough edges but the packaging and character of this car is clear to see from behind the wheel. If Jaguar’s design team can deliver on the styling and the engineering team can deliver on this new aluminium-mix architecture then the big three German brands will seriously have to start watching their backs.

We waited forever to see a Jaguar SUV, then finally the Jaguar C-X17 concept arrived at the Frankfurt Motor Show earlier this year. Now, the blue paintwork of that original show car has been ditched in favour of silver, and Jaguar has allowed Auto Express behind the wheel ahead of the production car’s debut late in 2015.

It’s worth remembering that this is a hand-built concept so we’re not expecting the most refined driving experience in the world, but it’s great for showing off how the C-X17 will look. Sitting in the blazing Dubai sunshine it looks every inch a Jaguar, from its large XJ-inspired grille to the muscular rear wheelarches and narrow taillights borrowed from the F-Type.


The design team behind this concept is keen to see it through to production almost unchanged as well; as Julian Thomson, Advanced Design Director revealed: “we’re not in the business of letting customers down, we can’t show this concept and then come out with something that looks nothing like it.”


Step in to the cabin and you start to get a sense of what the C-X17 is about; it’s the four-seat layout and sporty F-Type steering wheel that reveal this isn’t so much an SUV but a dynamic crossover. You sit relatively low down so you feel a little more connected to the action than you do in a Range Rover.


Underneath the bonnet is the 3.0-litre supercharged V6 engine used to great effect in the F-Type but also available detuned in the XJ limo and XF. In the production car it would be bolted in to Jaguar’s new iQ[Al] aluminium architecture – set to underpin all future Jags except the sports cars – but here it’s a mixture of unique parts and XF leftovers.


Without any sound insulation the roar of the V6 is always with you and there’s no polish on the ride or steering but you really get the sense of being cocooned within the C-X17, much like you do in a sports car. That’s no accident, as design and engineering teams have worked together from day one to help create these proportions, including the long bonnet and a shallow glass area.


In terms of what a drive like this can actually teach us about how the C-X17 will drive, there’s actually very little to learn. But it is interesting to talk to the team behind the project and hear how they want the production version to be “the most dynamic, the most efficient and the best-looking” car in its class.


Those are ambitions that Jaguar holds for each one of its future line-up, and with a generous head of steam behind it, you wouldn’t bet against a seriously strong future for Jaguar, bolstered by models like the C-X17.
