Jaguar Land Rover parent says company is 'safe in our hands'

The owner of Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) has vowed that quality and brand values will not be compromised by its overseas expansion plans – and vowed to support the business for decades.

Last week, JLR announced it will open a manufacturing plant in Brazil in a £240m investment, with the first cars expected to roll off the production line by 2016.

This will follow the opening of a joint venture investment worth £1.5bn in China, with Chinese carmaker Chery, due to open in 2015.

Although JLR has not revealed what models will be produced in China and Brazil, Halewood’s popular Range Rover Evoque, which has taken the global market by storm since its launch more than two years ago, will be an obvious contender.

Roger Maddison, chief car industry negotiator for Unite the Union, said he sees no threat to UK jobs from the two proposed international plants.

But concerns have been raised about what impact they could have on the renowned British design qualities of JLR models, and the supreme quality of manufacturing at a company that prides itself on the high standards of its three UK plants in the West Midlands and Knowsley’s Halewood.

However, in an interview at Tata’s global headquarters in Mumbai, Mr Mukund Govind Rajan allayed any fears of compromise on JLR's standards.

He is a member of Tata’s group executive council and also brand custodian and chief ethics officer for the global conglomerate.

He told the Liverpool Post: “In China, setting up shop, a lot has to do with local recruitment and the value of training.”

JLR recently completed  a three- month training programme for China's “first joiners” who were tutored at Halewood in quality standards and will pass on their skills to the rest of the Chinese workforce.

Mr Rajan added: “We have terrific practices in the company and translating this to new facilities is not much of an issue.

“The brand will not undergo any changes in these markets. JLR brands will remain.

“Customers across the world have an affinity to JLR brands and the last thing we need to do as an owner is disrupt that relationship.

“We don’t want to create any kind of trouble for these brands.”

Mr Rajan said Tata had been delighted with the performance of JLR since it bought the group from Ford for £1.15bn and injected a further £1.5bn in 2009 to ensure its survival during one of the worst downturns in the automotive sector in decades.

And he reassured the UK workforce that Tata will be the custodian of JLR for decades to come.

“We have been delighted with the way the company and employees responded to the challenges at JLR,” he said.

“It is not about how do we save cash and cut back. It is about what do we do to build the business in the next 50 years. We don’t enter businesses easily, but when we do we are in it for the long term.

“We are not an aggressive, acquisitive entity, firing management and stripping assets and moving on. We build in the long term.”

When Tata bought JLR,  it also acquired Corus Steel in the UK and Mr Rajan admitted that there was a perception among Indian commentators and market analysts that the JLR deal was the “dodgier” of the two, but he said: “On current form,  JLR is turning out to be one of our outstanding successes.

“We work with the unions and the community and with JLR we have been very lucky and fortunate.

“There is a fair amount of satisfaction that a lot of growth has been seen and perhaps it has surprised the company, particularly the growth in China.

“But when we went in, this company had tradition and a legacy and a very interesting product pipeline and smart managers.

“We committed capital to ensure that pipeline was delivered and we needed leadership that was willing to give people the space to pursue their dreams.

“JLR meant a lot to the Tata group and they have a lot of time for the company and the new owners that inspired the managers.

“They knew we were watching and waiting for their success. It says a lot about the quality of the people we have there.”

Jaguar Land Rover to build plant in Brazil, the first British car maker to do so.

  • Agreement signed with the State of Rio de Janeiro to build a Jaguar Land Rover manufacturing facility
  • Jaguar Land Rover will invest R$750m (£240m) in the programme
  • Plant will have an annual production capacity of 24,000 vehicles
  • Plant will initially employ 400 people, generating additional jobs in the supply chain
  • First vehicles to come off the assembly line in 2016

Jaguar Land Rover is to become the first British carmaker to open a manufacturing facility in Brazil following a landmark agreement between the company and state authorities to build a plant in the State of Rio de Janeiro.

An agreement paving the way for construction of the plant has been signed by Phil Hodgkinson, Global Business Expansion Director of Jaguar Land Rover, and Sergio Cabral, State Governor of Rio de Janeiro.

Jaguar Land Rover’s planned expansion into Brazil is the next major step in the company’s strategy to increase its global manufacturing footprint and create additional capacity. This new facility will play an important role in supporting the significant growth opportunity identified in Brazil and across other South American markets.

Dr Ralf Speth, CEO of Jaguar Land Rover, said: “Brazil and the surrounding regions are very important. Customers there have an increasing appetite for highly capable premium products.

“This new programme will enable us to bring exciting new vehicles to them, with outstanding British design and engineering, creating a world-class Jaguar Land Rover facility incorporating leading premium manufacturing technologies.

“We have established excellent working relationships with the State of Rio de Janeiro, the City of Itatiaia & the Rio de Janeiro State Industrial Development Company and we look forward to attracting new customers to our business in this important market.”

Based in the City of Itatiaia, the new programme represents a total investment of R$750m (£240m) by 2020.

Construction of the premium manufacturing facility will commence in mid-2014. It is anticipated that the first vehicles will come off the assembly line in 2016, subject to the final approval of the plans from the Brazilian Federal Government under its Inovar-auto Programme. The new plant will have a capacity to build 24,000 vehicles annually for the Brazilian market.

Initially, the plant will employ almost 400 people. This number is expected to almost double by the end of the decade. This new manufacturing facility will also create additional jobs across the local supply chain network.

Following a detailed feasibility study, Jaguar Land Rover selected the City of Itatiaia, close to the heart of the emerging Regional Automotive Zone, due to its excellent logistics links, access to the local supplier base and skilled workforce.

Sergio Cabral, Governor of Rio de Janeiro State commented: "The choice of Rio de Janeiro to host the Jaguar Land Rover’s new facility is another historic achievement for our state. We offer perfect conditions to JLR to install its plant in Brazil, as we have an automotive hub in the South Fluminense region that concentrates qualified labour and important suppliers.

It is a privilege to welcome this great group, with an estimated investment of up to R$750 million and we are confident that this agreement will bring to Brazil extraordinary results."

Jaguar Land Rover in Brazil

Jaguar Land Rover has had a presence in the Brazilian market for more than 20 years. Its national sales company is based in Sao Paulo, employing almost 100 people. There are currently 35 dealers across Brazil with further expansion planned in the next year.

So far in 2013, Jaguar Land Rover sales in Brazil have increased by more than 40% to 9,549 vehicles over the 10 month period. The best-selling models in Brazil are Range Rover Evoque, Freelander and Discovery.

Halewood celebrates breaking the ONE MILLION production milestone.

  • 1,000,000 vehicles built at Halewood since 2001 including, Jaguar X-Type, Land Rover Freelander 2 and Range Rover Evoque.
  • Milestone vehicle will be a unique Range Rover Evoque, donated to Cancer Research UK.
  • A record breaking 220,000 Range Rover Evoques built in just 24 months brings 1m milestone to Halewood ahead of original forecast schedule.
Jaguar Land Rover is celebrating the production of the 1,000,000th Jaguar Land Rover vehicle at its Halewood advanced manufacturing facility, near Liverpool, today (25th November 2013).
The 1,000,000 vehicle is a unique Range Rover Evoque, painted in a special one-off colour combination and will be donated to Cancer Research UK. The vehicle is a Fuji-White, Dynamic with ebony-black alloy wheels and distinctive and unique Firenze-Red contrast roof, matching Firenze-Red mirror scalps and red/black sports seats and interior door panels.

Global demand for Range Rover Evoque has exceeded expectations with 18,000 advanced orders before job 1 on 4 July 2011. With continued demand for Evoque and growing sales of Land Rover Freelander 2, this production milestone was achieved earlier than predicted. Production volume at Halewood has increased significantly over the past 12 months due to 24 hour working, bringing the arrival of the 1,000,000 vehicle ahead of original forecasts.
Between 2001 and 2009, 363,603 Jaguar X-Type and X-Type Estates were manufactured at Halewood. The Jaguar X-Type was Jaguar's best-selling model during much of its production run and was Jaguar's first compact executive car for 50 years. In 2002, the Jaguar X-Type Diesel 2.0 was launched and made history for the company as Jaguar’s first ever diesel model. Also in 2002 the Jaguar X-Type Estate was launched, again making history as Jaguar’s first ever estate vehicle.
In 2003 the X-Type achieved best in class Paint Appearance in the JD Power US survey, a hotly contended and sought after prize, which was retained in 2004 and again in 2006. In 2005 Halewood celebrated another significant manufacturing award, this time with the JD Power European Gold Plant Award in Recognition of X-Type’s excellent quality. In 2006 the 2.2 Diesel was launched and in December 2009 the last Jaguar X-Type drove off the line at Halewood.
In 2005 manufacturing preparation works commenced, following significant investment by Land Rover, for the production of the all new Land Rover Freelander 2. On 25 October 2006 the Land Rover Freelander 2 Job 1 drove off the production line and was welcomed into the world by Premier League footballers from Liverpool Football Club. In May 2012 Halewood celebrated the 300,000 production milestone. The global demand for Freelander 2 continues today and it has been one of Land Rover's most popular models with 381,211 being manufactured to date.
In July 2011 Halewood, and the world, welcomed the arrival of the Range Rover Evoque. The smallest, most efficient production Range Rover ever made. When the Evoque started life it had already generated an exceptional market response with more than 18,000 advance orders from customers worldwide. Waiting lists for the car peaked at 12 months for some markets during the second half of 2011. As a result of this demand, Halewood Operations moved to 24 hour production for the first time in its 50 year history. The Evoque has received over 130 global awards and is the biggest selling Jaguar Land Rover vehicle, breaking Jaguar Land Rover production volume records in both of its first two years of production. Halewood has manufactured 255,186 to date.
Richard Else, Operations Director, Halewood, said: “We are delighted to be celebrating this huge milestone for Halewood. This unique Evoque looks stunning and is a one-off vehicle that will raise money for Cancer Research UK projects here in the North West.”
“Over the past few years many of the families of my growing team have been impacted by various forms of cancer. This milestone vehicle, built with pride at Halewood, will help raise much needed funds to help eradicate this dreadful disease.”
The 1,000,000th vehicle will be donated to Cancer Research UK, who will take ownership of the vehicle later in the year. The CRUK team will be placing the car in a special auction event in 2014. Details of the event will be revealed in the new year and funds raised from the vehicle will then be spent on CRUK projects in the North West of England.
Cancer Research UK funds world-class research and clinical trials throughout the North West and last year spent nearly £21 million supporting the work of doctors, nurses and scientists at hospitals and major universities in the region. Every hour more than four people in the North West are diagnosed with cancer.
Head of Volunteer Fundraising at Cancer Research UK, Simon O’Leary, said: “We are incredibly grateful to Jaguar Land Rover for thinking of us and making such a generous gift. Cancer Research UK receives no government funding for its life-saving research, so every step we make towards beating cancer relies on every pound donated. The money raised by the auction of the car will make a real difference in the fight against cancer.”

POWERTRAIN

A turbocharged, direct injected 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine debuted in the Land Rover LR2 for 2013, offering more power and torque than the 3.2-liter inline-six it replaced while consuming less fuel. This engine delivers 240hp at 5500 rpm and 250 lb.-ft. of torque at 3200 rpm, providing a broad power band for strong low-speed response.

The 2.0-liter engine first appeared in the 2012 Range Rover Evoque and features advanced technologies such as high-pressure direct fuel injection and variable valve timing.  A high efficiency turbocharger delivers rapid response, and a fabricated steel exhaust manifold promotes quick catalytic converter light-off. Twin balance shafts ensure smooth operation, and piston rings and tappets have been coated to reduce friction.

All LR2 models are equipped with Intelligent Power System Management (IPSM), which features Smart Regenerative Charging. Where possible, the alternator charges the battery only when the vehicle is decelerating, recovering kinetic energy rather than consuming energy during engine operation.

The engine is paired with an Aisin AWF21 six-speed automatic transmission engineered with advanced neutral logic control to reduce internal drag when the LR2 is idling. The transmission also features a remote breather, routed above the vehicle's water wading depth (19.7 inch / 500 mm). In sport mode, the transmission is programmed to hold low gears longer and to downshift more readily, to assist acceleration.  CommandShift® allows manual sequential gearshifts.

INTERIOR AND ELECTRONICS

The 2014 Land Rover LR2 and LR2 HSE models come with grained leather covered seats as standard, while the LR2 HSE LUX gets an upgraded Windsor leather covered seat with double contrast stitch. The standard dual-panel panoramic sunroof provides a bright and airy feel in the cabin; the front section opens and slides over the second-row glass roof panel. With Passive Start, the engine starts at the touch of a button as long as the key is somewhere inside the car.

The driver can control the standard Meridian™ audio system and the optional satellite navigation system through the standard 7-inch color touch-screen2. For 2014, the screen uses capacitive technology, which is more responsive than the resistive touch system used before. The screen provides improved scrolling on the main navigation screen (when equipped) and QWERTY keyboard for phonebook searching.2

A 5-inch screen between the main dials within the instrument cluster displays primary vehicle-related information, such as temperature and fuel levels, gear position and Terrain Response® mode. Steering wheel toggle switches operate clear drop-down menus and vehicle setup details.

The LR2 HSE is equipped with a rear view camera, which shows the view from the back of the vehicle on the infotainment screen along with dynamic lines representing the boundaries of the vehicle and the predicted path as the vehicle reverses3. The system also incorporates 'Hitch Assist,' a graphic superimposed on the camera showing the position of the tow ball3.

The available hard disc drive navigation system comes with such features as ECO Route planning, Dynamic Zoom, Visual Lane guidance, POI (Point of Interest) management and repeat TMC traffic guidance2. A 'Say What You See' voice activation system will prompt the driver visually with the commands he or she needs to speak in order to control functions in the audio, optional satellite navigation, and phone systems2. The prompts are displayed in an easy-to-follow 'step by step' format on the screen.

Meridian™ Sound Systems

Two Meridian™ audio systems are available on the 2014 LR2. Standard in the LR2 and LR2 HSE, the first system offers 380 Watts of power delivered via an 11-speaker system that delivers exceptional stereo sound. Included with the HSE LUX and also available as a standalone option for the others, the 825-Watt surround sound 17-speaker system with Trifield™ technology provides a natural, enveloping, concert-like experience for all occupants. Both Meridian™ systems are equipped with subwoofers for a deep, bass sound and an Audyssey MultEQ audio tuning system.

There is also a 3.5mm auxiliary input jack for music players and Bluetooth® audio streaming from any supporting devices2.  HD Radio™ and SiriusXM Satellite Radio™ are also available.

DRIVING DYNAMICS

The LR2 combines agile and refined on-road behavior with legendary Land Rover off-road ability, thanks in large part to its four-wheel independent suspension. The responsive rack-and-pinion steering is direct and fluid, with just 2.6 turns lock-to-lock. Rigidly mounted to the front sub-frame to improve lateral stiffness, the steering column is adjustable for reach and rake.

Off-road capability for the Land Rover LR2 starts with 8.26-inch (210 mm) minimum of ground clearance that can overcome rocky, sandy, rutted or muddy terrain. The LR2 is rated to tow a 3500lbs. (1585 kg) braked trailer. The standard 18-inch alloy wheels are fitted with all-terrain tires.

FOUR WHEEL DRIVE SYSTEM

The intelligent full-time all-wheel drive system was developed in conjunction with HaldexTM, whose acclaimed center-coupling technology continuously alters the front-rear torque split through a hydraulically operated multi-plate wet clutch. In effect, the coupling gives the proactive engagement benefits of all-wheel drive and the efficiency and fuel economy of an on-demand system.

A high-pressure pre-charge pump pressurizes the hydraulics in the center coupling as soon as the engine is started, allowing for all-wheel drive from rest to reduce wheelspin from standing starts. On the move, the front-rear torque split adapts continuously to suit changing conditions. The system engages quickly when traction loss is detected and can disengage quickly to optimize the response of the stability control systems. Only a small amount of torque is fed to the rear wheels under normal conditions, such as on a straight paved road, but in low traction or off-road situations, almost all of the engine torque can instantaneously be delivered to the rear wheels, if required. The HaldexTM unit can achieve full torque transmission in just 150 milliseconds, engaging within 15 degrees of wheel-slip rotation.

TERRAIN RESPONSE® AND OFF-ROAD DRIVING SYSTEMS

The Terrain Response® system3 is one of the core Land Rover technologies that gives the LR2 its outstanding range of capabilities. It optimizes drivability and traction by adapting the responses of the vehicle's engine, transmission, center coupling and chassis systems to match the demands of the terrain.

Terrain Reponse® is a fully integrated system that manages:

  • Engine Management
  • Transmission Control
  • Electronic Traction Control and Anti-lock Brakes: These slip and braking control systems are all adjusted and tuned by Terrain Response to offer optimum grip, braking power and safety on the chosen terrain3
  • Dynamic Stability Control (DSC): DSC is designed to stop torque to a wheel after loss of traction, but in some off-road situations torque feed is still desirable, even when traction is compromised3. Terrain Response® automatically adjusts DSC so that appropriate torque is maintained
  • Center Coupling

The driver can choose from four Terrain Response® settings via buttons on the center console:

  • General Driving: provides a broad span of ability suitable for most on-road driving
  • Grass/Gravel/Snow: for slippery conditions, on-road or off-road
  • Mud and Ruts
  • Sand
Terrain Response® changes the setting of the electronically controlled HaldexTM coupling to optimize
all-wheel drive in difficult conditions. Each Terrain Response® program applies different transmission shift mappings; the Transmission Control Module also manages torque converter lock-up, which has different requirements depending on the selected Terrain Response®mode.

Hill Descent Control (HDC®) also plays major role in off-road driving3. Using the anti-lock brake system, HDC® automatically restricts speed downhill and improves driver control on slippery descents. HDC® is automatically engaged on appropriate Terrain Response® programs, with the downhill speed rate varying according to which surface is selected.

Another innovation on Land Rover LR2 is the brand's patented Gradient Release Control system3. Linked to HDC®, it ensures that when releasing the brakes on extremely steep hills, brake-line pressure is released progressively when the driver's foot is removed from the pedal, helping the driver maintain control.

The LR2 uses large vented four-wheel disc brakes. The 12.5-inch (316 mm) front discs are 'reverse vented,' so they draw cool air into the disc over the central bell, which is then vented out from the rim of the disc. This approach improves thermal stability under severe braking.

Rear brake discs are also substantial - 12-inch (302 mm) in diameter - and include an Electric Parking Brake that adjusts brake force according to the slope the vehicle is parked on. The system takes into account whether the brakes are hot or cold when the LR2 has been parked. If hot, the system 'wakes up' periodically to ensure clamping force is not lost as the brakes cool down. The electric parking brake may still be used as an emergency brake, automatically selecting the most stable braking method by employing skid prevention techniques. An additional safety feature prevents the brake from being released unless the drivers' seat is occupied.

The braking system also includes Electronic Brake-force Distribution (EBD) and Emergency Brake Assist (EBA), the latter boosting pedal pressure when full braking is required. Corner Brake Control (CBC) enhances rear-end stability when braking in corners and also helps to control the Hill Descent Control, Electronic Traction Control and Dynamic Stability Control systems3.

Roll Stability Control uses gyroscopic sensing to compare the rate of change of body roll angle with the steered course3. If necessary, incremental brake force is applied to specific wheels to reduce the chances of a roll.

DESIGN

As always with a Land Rover, functionality is a fundamental driver of design for the LR2. The narrow

A-pillars help provide excellent all-round visibility. The pronounced hood edges help the driver place the vehicle accurately on the road or trail. The wheel stance and wide track help deliver agile handling and surefooted grip. The short front and rear overhangs and high underbody are essential for off-road performance, maximizing approach and departure angles. Both front and rear light systems utilize LED technology.

The LR2 HSE grille insert bars, fender vent and rear finisher strip have a light gloss silver finish, with the grille surround finished in gloss black. There are 18-inch, 10-spoke alloy wheels as standard and two 19-inch wheel options. Two new colors that have been added to the LR2 range for 2014: Zanzibar is a new metallic copper, and Loire Blue replaces Baltic Blue.

BODY STRUCTURE

The LR2 uses unibody construction. Ultra-high-strength steel is used extensively in the door beams and for various strengthening reinforcements. DP600 dual-phase steel - which requires special pressing because of its strength - is used for the A-pillars, lower sills, roof supports, front side members and dash. Even the hood-locking platform has been designed to help boost structural integrity, ensuring good load transfer from one front crash rail to the other.

The LR2 uses 100 percent double-sided zinc-coated steel panels as part of the sophisticated anti-corrosion and paint treatment. Vulnerable areas of the vehicle, including the sills and lower doors, are coated in a tough thermoplastic cladding.  A double bulkhead in the engine bay improves powertrain isolation and provides a clean area for components such as the ABS modulator, brake booster and windshield wiper system. The radiator is protected by a strong polymer undertray, while a structural steel undertray protects the engine.

SAFETY

Responsive handling, large four-wheel disc brakes and full-time all-wheel drive system help the driver avoid hazards. Another key to safety is maintaining excellent visibility under all conditions.  The high 'command view' seating position provides visibility over traffic and a clear view of the road3.

The generous glass area offers excellent all-around views. Large door mirrors offer a wide field of view. Rain-sensing wipers and automatic headlights, both of which work via infrared sensor technology, are standard on all models. An electrically heated front windshield and heated washer jets are available to maintain visibility in low temperature conditions.

Passive safety starts with the strong unibody and its passenger cell.  Front and rear crumple zones are designed to help absorb as much energy as possible during an impact. Side-impact protection is further supported by the ultra-high-strength steel door beams, the strong and deep door sills and the raised seat position.

All LR2 models feature seven airbags including front-seat side airbags protect against side impacts and
full-length curtain airbags in the roof side structure6. An inflatable knee bolster helps protect the driver against leg injury.

Pedestrian safety is also a high priority, with 2.76-3.54-inch (70mm-90mm) of clearance between the upper hood and under-hood components in the critical zones. The excellent energy absorbing qualities of the hood further assist pedestrian protection.

Is Land Rover about to rename the Freelander 2 a Discovery ?

Land Rover may rebadge its Freelander medium SUV as a Discovery when the model's successor goes on sale in 2015.

Such a move would create a Discovery subbrand for Land Rover, with the new vehicle slotting in below the current Discovery large SUV.

The Freelander's successor will be bigger than the current model and will also have a seven-seat variant, so it's likely that it will get a new name, a person familiar with the plan told Automotive News Europe.

Land Rover already has a similar naming strategy for the Range Rover and Range Rover Sport. The Freelander is sold as the LR2 in the United States and the Discovery is badged as the LR4.

Bernstein Research analyst Max Warburton said renaming the Freelander would be simpler for potential customers.

Currently the Freelander and Discovery are grouped together under "leisure" in Land Rover's "three pillars" design strategy. Range Rover-badged cars come under "luxury" while the Defender is "dual purpose."

Land Rover wouldn't comment on its plans for the new Freelander.

The Freelander replacement will be built on a version of the current Freelander's steel platform and production will remain at Jaguar Land Rover's plant in Halewood, England.

According to Bernstein, the Freelander is the only model in the Land Rover range that isn't profitable once r&d expenditure and other fixed costs have been factored.

JLR invests heavily in new plant for Castle Bromwich site.

VEHICLE manufacturer Jaguar Land Rover is gearing up for a major increase in production at its Castle Bromwich plant after a massive new order for plant infrastructure.

The plant, which manufactures Jaguar cars, is already scaling up production where in addition to the XK, XF and XJ models it also now produces the two-seater F-Type sports car.

The company has also announced it is to increase volumes significantly by producing a new small sports saloon, although this will be made at the nearby Lode Lane plant in Solihull where £1.5bn is being invested in new production facilities.

To facilitate growth at Castle Bromwich, the Indian-owned business has placed an order for five massive new overhead cranes for its press shop.

Materials Handling World said the company had placed an order for five Konecranes for the factory. The cranes are all from Konecranes UK's Smarton SMT range and will operate on average spans of 27 to 29 metres.
The first of the F-Types leave Jaguar\'s Castle Bromwich plant
Two of the cranes are 60 tonnes - one of which is to be a 60/30 tonne with two trolleys where both hooks are equipped with motorised rotation. In another bay, and operating with similar features to the two 60t cranes, will be two 32 tonne heavy duty cranes. The fifth crane will be a 30 tonne model.

The magazine said the contract also specified the dismantling and relocation of an existing 50 tonne Konecrane. The new cranes will all be delivered from Konecranes UK's manufacturing facility in East Kilbride during March 2014.

The contract is a further indication of JLR’s long-term plans for the future of the Castle Bromwich plant.

The company has already bought up a multiplex cinema on a site next to the factory n order to cater for expansion, while it is also in talks to acquire the nearby Dunlop Motorsport factory to provide further space.
TheBusinessDesk.com - Tomorrow's news today
It is thought the company will also unveil a coupe version of the F-Type at the Los Angeles next month, although it has yet to confirm whether a 4x4 concept crossover Jaguar, which was displayed at the Frankfurt Motor Show, will be put into production.

Jaguar Land Rover announces significant sales improvements for the UK in September.

Jaguar Land Rover UK is celebrating record September sales with retail figures up 13 per cent year-to-date over the same period last year.

Land Rover had its best ever September month of sales with 10,769 vehicles registered; up 11 per cent on the same month last year and 13 per cent up year-to-date. The bookends of the brand drove the impressive figures with a record September for the Land Rover Defender (up 30 per cent compared to the same period last year) and continued strong sales of Land Rover's flagship vehicle, the all new Range Rover (up 24 per cent compared to the same period last year).

The Range Rover Evoque continues to be successful (up 35 per cent September 2013 versus September 2012) and the new Range Rover Sport has made a strong start with sales of 1,309 vehicles during what is only the second month of customer deliveries. Monthly retail figures for Land Rover's newest model are set to increase in line with production ramp-up and will see the UK fulfil its healthy order bank over the coming months.

The Land Rover Discovery's popularity remains with outstanding residual values and class-leading versatility keeping sales stable. The Land Rover Freelander continues to have an excellent 2013 with retails up 13 per cent in September and 35 per cent year-to-date.

Jaguar is celebrating a 19 per cent increase in car sales year-to-date, with a year on year increase across its model range of seven per cent. The successful launch of the stunning new F-TYPE convertible sports car, of which more than 1,000 are now with UK customers, is one highlight in a year which has seen a surge in sales of the popular Jaguar XF executive car and XJ luxury saloon. In 2013 sales of the XF are up 12 per cent and XJ 6 per cent; a result of the introduction of new, efficient and high performance derivatives of each model.

Jaguar land Rover seek partner to assist in Hybrid tech to lower Corporate CO2 figures

Jaguar Land Rover is talking with other automakers about a partnership on hybrid vehicles as the UK luxury car manufacturer battles to meet CO2 emissions targets in Europe.

"Some discussions have taken place with other manufacturers," Wolfgang Epple, JLR's research and technology head, told Automotive News Europe. He declined to identify which companies JLR has spoken with.

Epple has previous experience in collaborating with other automakers on hybrids. As vice president of hybrid technology at BMW he worked with General Motors and DaimlerChrysler on the development of a transmission in the United States to channel both gasoline and electric power.

Epple said the cost-saving cooperation, which started in 2005, was successful. "Subsequently each of the manufacturers has built its own car and we have all used the same components," he said.

JLR will start selling diesel-hybrid versions of the Range Rover and Range Rover Sport early next year. According to the company, these models will reduce CO2 by 26 percent compared with the standard V-6 diesels on which they are based. The two SUVs will not be sold in the United States.

Jaguar Land Rover has to make the biggest improvements of any automaker to reach the European Union's CO2 target for 2015, according to a report by analyst Bernstein Research.

"Arguably the single biggest challenge for JLR is hitting future fuel economy/CO2 emissions," report author Max Warburton wrote. "It will need to fit hybrid to a greater proportion of its vehicles than almost any other manufacturer in order to hit CO2 targets."

According to the Bernstein report, JLR must cut average CO2 emissions to 164 grams per kilometer by 2015 to meet European regulations. According to JLR, the company's average CO2 figure in 2011 was 206g/km, down from 223g/km in 2010.

The 164g/km target, which is higher than the overall industry goal of 130g/km, reflects the higher average weight of Land Rover and Jaguar vehicles, the company said.

Earlier this month JLR said it would produce three electric concepts based on the Range Rover Evoque compact SUV in a development study partly funded by the UK government's Technology Strategy Board. Partners in the project to develop a mild hybrid, a plug-in hybrid and a full-electric vehicle will include British drivetrain specialist GKN, the engineering arm of the Williams F1 team and British battery vehicle maker Zytek.

JLR is also investing in a new advanced research center in the UK. Hybrids will be a key area of focus when the center opens in 2016.

The Range Rover Evoque, the best-selling Range Rover model worldwide, enters its 2014 with advanced new driveline technologies, new driver assistance features and detail design enhancements throughout.

For 2014, the 2-liter 240hp Turbocharged Direct Injected engine teams with a new ZF-9HP 9-speed automatic transmission, among the first fitted to a passenger car. With a wider spread of ratios than the 6-speed automatic it replaces, the new 9-speed enhances both performance and efficiency.

A new Active Driveline system with active differentials and torque vectoring also debuts on the 2014 Range Rover Evoque as standard in all models3. The new 4WD system reduces driveline drag by decoupling 4WD during steady-state driving at speeds above 22 mph, automatically activating 4WD drive within 300 milliseconds whenever it is needed. Active Torque Biasing uses an electronically controlled differential to distribute torque between the rear wheels, optimizing traction and stability. In addition, a Torque Vectoring feature further enhances agility and safety by redirecting torque among all four wheels to counteract understeer.

New driver-assist features include: Park Exit (to automatically exit parallel parking bays), Adaptive Cruise Control (with Queue Assist, Forward Alert and Intelligent Emergency Braking), and Closing Vehicle Sensing3.

The 2014 Range Rover Evoque also features exterior detail changes, new color options for the interior and new alloy wheel styles.
