AutoExpress: Winter Tires or 4x4: which is best?

I for one was a non-believer until I had the chance to use a set of Michelin X-Ice Winter Tires, what a difference. I found that I was looking in the rearview mirror a bit more than normal just making sure that the car behind me had the same control over their car that I did.
