Updated: McLaren and Honda discuss road car collaboration

The relationship between the British sports car manufacturer and Japanese automotive giant looks set to go much deeper than a Formula 1 engine deal
McLaren and Honda are considering ways to extend their Formula 1 tie-up into road cars, McLaren Group CEO Martin Whitmarsh has confirmed.

Earlier this year, Honda announced that it would return to F1 as an engine supplier to McLaren Racing in 2015. The two companies enjoyed a fruitful partnership in F1 between 1988 and the end of 1992, winning four drivers’ championships and four constructors’ crowns during that spell.

Whitmarsh described the new deal as a “multi-year” one, and his comments suggest that there is scope for a much deeper co-operation that could spread into McLaren’s automotive division.

“It’s a pure Formula 1 contract, but we’ve already been looking at automotive technology and we’re sharing that very openly,” said Whitmarsh at last weekend’s Hungarian Grand Prix. “Our road car strategy at the moment has no other automotive partner and
Honda would be a good place
to collaborate.”

Whitmarsh said the results of any Honda involvement in future McLaren road cars wouldn’t be seen for some years. The company is currently working on the third model in its contemporary range, the Porsche 911-
rivalling P13, but Honda hasn’t had any input into that car.

“If you look at our product range, 12C is running and will run for a few more years. P1 has just been launched and P13, which is the follow-up car, is relatively developed, so actually it is something that you would see in quite a few years to come,” he said.

A deeper relationship between McLaren and Honda would most likely be a bilateral technical arrangement, with both sides reaping the benefits for their road car projects.

“Nothing’s fixed, but we’re open to that and so are they,” said Whitmarsh.

It has also been reported that a McLaren 12C is being used in Acura's benchmarking tests for the new NSX in America.

A subsequent statement issued jointly by Honda and McLaren stressed that the immediate focus was on Formula 1: “On 16 May 2013, Honda announced its decision to participate in Formula 1 from the 2015 season, under a joint project with McLaren. This has led to a full, open and productive working relationship with McLaren. As Martin Whitmarsh has stated, many ideas have been discussed between McLaren and Honda colleagues.

"However, we both know how challenging it is to win in Formula 1, and we need to be 100 per cent committed to that task. Therefore, at this stage, all our focus is towards the development of the 2015 Formula 1 car and powertrain, and there are no plans for collaboration on other projects at this moment.”

Honda's Future Plans 2014, 2015, 2016

by Mark Rechtin of www.autonews.com

Honda Division is entering a somewhat fallow period for new products, since its four big-volume vehicles -- the Civic, Accord, CR-V and Odyssey -- have recently been redesigned.

But there will be plenty of changes to other models, especially light trucks, as well as variants to those four nameplates. And the Fit subcompact platform will become much more prominent in Honda's North American growth plans.

As vehicle redesigns occur, Honda will install its new-generation Earth Dreams engines, which have direct injection and double-overhead cams. Compared to Honda's current four-cylinder engines, the new design will bring at least a 10 percent fuel economy advantage.

Also, Honda is going big with continuously variable transmissions. Performance models and off-road vehicles will retain geared transmissions, but mainstream street-going cars will feature CVTs. A plant opening in Mexico will add up to 700,000 units of CVT capacity by 2017.

Here is a look at Honda's future product plans:

Fit: The redesigned subcompact coming in the summer of 2014 will be built at Honda's new plant in Celaya, Mexico. Honda will install the Earth Dreams 1.5-liter inline four-cylinder engine with 127 hp and 111 pounds-feet of torque, as well as a CVT. Although built locally, expect the new Fit to stick to the global platform.

Fit EV: The next Fit will have a different suspension module for hybrid and EV versions. It likely won't arrive until spring 2016.

Fit crossover: A concept crossover based on the Fit platform, called the Urban SUV, was unveiled at the 2013 Detroit auto show. It is 169.3 inches long, about 9 inches shorter than the Honda CR-V compact crossover. The production version, coming in the summer of 2014, will have the same Earth Dreams engine as the Fit, but could get an added turbocharger for upmarket models. Limited cargo capacity will be counteracted with Fit's fold-flat "Magic Seats" and by stashing the fuel tank under the front seats rather than behind the rear suspension.

Insight: Honda Motor CEO Takanobu Ito is noncommittal about whether Honda will produce a next-generation Insight to go head-to-head with the Toyota Prius. But Honda recently unveiled its next-generation single-motor IMA hybrid system with a lithium ion battery. It is connected to an Atkinson-cycle engine and combined with a new seven-speed dual-clutch transmission. More may be revealed at the Tokyo Motor Show in November.

Civic: Contrary to press reports, the Civic will not receive an Earth Dreams engine until its redesign in spring 2016.

Civic Hybrid: When the Civic is redesigned, the hybrid version will move from its one-motor IMA system to a two-motor system that allows extensive electric-only driving. One motor powers the wheels; the other recharges the batteries. It will be a cheaper version of the same system that is in the Accord Hybrid.

CR-Z: The possibility of a gasoline-powered version of the hybrid coupe is being studied for the next generation arriving in summer 2015.

Accord: After being redesigned last fall, a two-motor hybrid version arrives this summer. The hybrid will team a 124-kilowatt electric motor with a 2.0-liter Atkinson-cycle engine for a projected 49 mpg. Expect the next redesign in the second half of 2017.

Crosstour: Balky styling has hindered customer acceptance. Designers are looking at something more akin to an Audi Allroad for the next generation, arriving in spring 2015.

FCX Clarity: Honda's hydrogen fuel cell vehicle will be redesigned in mid-2015. The vehicle likely will be shown at the Tokyo Motor Show in November. Honda recently signed a technology-sharing deal with General Motors to develop the next-generation fuel cell for 2020, but insisted that there will be no badge engineering.

CR-V: Redesigned for the 2013 model year; the next one is expected in the first half of 2017.

Element: There will be no new Element. The CR-V and Fit-based crossover will fill that space.

Pilot: The wheelbase for the recently redesigned Acura MDX, which was increased by 3 inches, will be carried over to the redesigned Pilot when it arrives this fall. But because the MDX has an expensive suspension system, expect some minor cost-shaving changes to suspension components to hit the Pilot's price point. Sheet metal should move away from the "angry robot" look. It likely will get a 3.5-liter Earth Dreams V-6 that generates around 310 hp and 265 pounds-feet of torque.

Odyssey: A freshened version, with an optional built-in vacuum cleaner, goes on sale this summer.
The next generation arrives in fall 2016 on the Acura MDX platform, although expect a lower-cost suspension -- possibly an air-spring setup -- to hit a lower price point. When redesigned, the Odyssey will receive the 3.5-liter Earth Dreams V-6.

Ridgeline: Honda sources insist the company needs to keep a unibody pickup offering, but its styling, fuel economy and sticker price are arguments against it. The current platform runs until fall 2014, but there are no signs of a replacement.

Sound of Honda – Ayrton Senna 1989 is a must-watch!

If you have any affinity for motorsports and Formula 1 at all, then this stunning video is a must watch. Here’s Honda paying tribute to the sport’s best known and undisputedly most talented driver of all time, the great Aryton Senna, in a way that is unheard of before.

Sound of Honda – Ayrton Senna 1989 is a visual and aural recreation of the late three-time world champion’s spectacular qualifying lap for the unforgettable 1989 Japanese Grand Prix in Suzuka, where he set a time that was one and a half second clear of his teammate and championship rival, Alain Prost.

Honda used thousands of speakers and light fixtures calibrated with Senna’s telemetry data to duplicate the iconic lap in dramatic fashion. There was no car on the track, but the enormity of the achievement was duly felt. Honda and McLaren will be teaming up in F1 again in 2015, so this tribute also serves as a timely reminder to fans of the great partnership they once had.

What a lap. What a driver. There’s truly no other.

2015 Honda Fit Hybrid: Don't expect it in the US

by James Tate of www.msn.com

Honda’s near-future plans include a redesign of its subcompact Fit hatchback. Slated to debut next summer as a 2015 model, the new Fit has a more aggressive design and will run a 1.5-liter four-cylinder engine from Honda’s "Earth Dreams" powertrain.

But the intriguing question remains: Will Honda finally give us the Fit Hybrid?

On sale in Europe and Japan since 2010, the next-generation Fit Hybrid sports some interesting technologies. Instead of the Integrated Motor Assist system seen in other Honda hybrids, a cheaper hybrid solution that can't power the car on electricity alone, the 2015 Fit will use Honda’s new Sport Hybrid i-DCD system.

Sport Hybrid i-DCD installs a single electric motor inside a new 7-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission, which is paired with a 1.5-liter Atkinson-cycle gas engine. Lighter and more efficient lithium-ion batteries replace the nickel metal-hydride units, while the continuously variable transmission is also gone.

With a fully electric compressor and an electric servo brake system improving electric regenerative efficiency, Honda claims that the 2015 Fit Hybrid returns 35-percent higher fuel economy than that of the Integrated Motor Assist hybrids. Testing in Japan returned an impressive estimated 86 mpg.

Honda is also promising an upgraded interior experience for the Fit, which has been an area of complaints in the past. Honda hopes that its efforts in revamping the Fit is can boost sales: Despite critical acclaim, the Fit ranks fifth in subcompact sales so far in 2013, and the segment is becoming more crowded every year.

All of that having been said, the current Fit Hybrid isn’t offered in the United States, and we don’t expect this new one to be, either. Why, you ask? Well, the price of the hybrid powertrain pushes the economy-focused Fit into a range where everyone looking at a Fit will simply opt for the already-economical conventional-engine models. It seems much more logical for Honda to fit the new hybrid system in its CRZ, Insight and Civic Hybrid, the last of which is priced considerably closer to its gas-powered versions.

The Civic Hybrid, for example, costs $25,150, or more than $5,300 on top of a base Civic LX. While that price includes many features that are optional on lower-grade Civics, only 2 percent of Civic buyers take the hybrid. We can't imagine the Fit Hybrid selling for much less, and at that price, you're talking about a regular Civic for thousands less or the much larger Accord for the same price. For Honda, the cost of certifying the car -- even after it's assembled at Honda's new plant in Mexico, versus Japan -- may not be worth it.

America may yet see a version of the i-DCD system, though; current reports suggest a whole new subcompact sedan and crossover based on the Fit platform being offered to U.S. consumers. Both the new sedan and crossover would feature the new hybrid system, and they could arrive for sale in the United States as soon as early 2014.

Temple of Vtec: NSX Prototype Track Run

Honda doesn't need to rely on fleet sales. Retail sales very strong. Accord, Civic, CR-V and Odyssey #1

Honda Leads All Automakers in Retail Sales in Key Volume Segments

Accord, Civic, CR-V and Odyssey tops in respective segments year-to-date
  • Accord, Civic, CR-V and Odyssey rank #1 in retail sales in their respective segments, according to latest Polk data
  • Honda brand sales of 668,597 up 6.5 percent year-to-date through June
  • More than 98 percent of brand sales to retail customers, protecting resale values; many competitor brands exceed 20 percent in fleet sales
Honda topped all mainstream automakers in percentage of sales to retail buyers during the first five months of 2013, with more than 98 percent1 of the brand's auto sales in the U.S. sold to individual (non-fleet) consumers, based on new-vehicle registration data from R.L. Polk & Co. With a strong focus on providing long-term value and low cost of ownership to its customers, the Honda brand has increased sales by 6.5 percent in 2013 with 668,597 Honda cars and light trucks finding new homes through the end of June.

Honda's four best-selling models, Accord, Civic, CR-V and Odyssey, lead their respective segments2 in sales to retail consumers. Together, these segments represent more than 50 percent of all light-duty vehicle sales in the United States.

"We're earning our sales growth on the strength of our products and the value they deliver to individual car buyers," said John Mendel, executive vice president of sales for American Honda Motor Co., Inc. "Our strategy is unique among volume automakers, as we are focused on selling vehicles to individual car buyers and not corporate sales to fleets, which is why Honda vehicles have among the lowest cost of ownership and highest resale values in the industry."

In the highly competitive mid-size segment, where Accord leads retail sales, many high-volume entrants have sold in excess of 30 percent1 of their vehicles to fleet customers thus far in 2013 while over 98 percent1 of Accords were sold to individuals (non-fleet). The 2013 Accord is the most-awarded3 mid-size car when it comes to value. "Honda continues to deliver on the promise that made them the Residual Value Award recipient for 2013," said Eric Lyman, vice president of Editorial for ALG.

"Honda keeps incentives and fleet penetration low - two actions that heavily impact future values. With high volume models like Accord and CR-V at the top of their respective segments, Hondas hold their value better than any other brand."

According to Honda analysis of Polk new-vehicle registration data, more than 19 percent1 of light-duty vehicle industry sales so far this year have been to non-retail customers such as rental-car companies, corporate and government fleet operations, most at steeply discounted prices compared to the average retail transaction price. Discounts on large volumes of vehicles can have a long-term negative impact on the residual or resale values of vehicles purchased at retail. This effectively increases the cost-of-ownership for retail buyers when they eventually sell or trade-in their vehicles.
