2014 Honda Civic review: An almost-HUD without the $1,000 upcharge

by Bill Howard of www.extremetech.com

The Honda Civic advances the state of the art in dashboard technology with an almost-head-up display that costs nothing instead of the usual $1,000-plus for a HUD. Honda relocates the most important gauges to a cluster at the base of the windshield so can see your speed, fuel efficiency, and navigation prompt just by glancing down. Either way, high-end HUD or Honda Civic upper cluster, technology minimizes driver distraction.

Honda’s superior display presentation benefits Honda as well as the user. The Civic has long been a compact car sales leader but others have caught up in performance and desirability, particularly the Mazda 3, Ford Focus, and Hyundai Elantra. The easy-to-read instruments may help keep Honda number one in compact car sales, around 350,000 this year. If Honda brings Apple iOS mirroring to the dash in 2014, replicating the Apple display on the car’s LCD, that will help the Civic’s popularity, too.

How Honda’s almost-HUD works

Honda splits its instrument panel into the traditional instrument cluster seen through the steering wheel spokes, and a row of gauges and displays set back against the base of the windshield. The top row comprises a gas gauge that is a long horizontal strip, economy indicators as vertical bars, a digital speedometer, and a color LCD that can display navigation, phone, entertainment, or fuel economy information. The traditional instrument cluster is reduced to a big tachometer and warning lights. There is also a 7-inch color LCD in the center stack providing more detail on infotainment.

Every time the driver looks away from the road, it’s a distraction, and there’s a brief period of re-acclimation when the eyes return to the road. To read the center stack display, the driver looks both over and down; to read the instrument panel, the driver looks down.

A head-up display is projected onto a mirrored film at the base of the windshield and the information appears to be floating just above the hood of the car, so it’s always in the driver’s line of sight. Honda’s top row of gauges is only a little farther down in the driver’s line of sight than a HUD. If the driver’s main focus drops to the HUD or Honda’s gauges, action on the road can still be tracked.
HondaCivicUpperGauges
The focal point for a HUD and Honda’s gauges is farther from the driver’s eyes than an instrument panel. A driver whose eyes call for reading glasses to resolve what’s on the instrument panel 18 inches away may be able to focus better on a HUD or Honda’s row of gauges that are 24-36 inches away.

With fewer gauges and indicators in the traditional instrument panel, there’s less around the edges that can be obstructed by the steering wheel. All this adds up to Honda’s top shelf gauge package being a reasonable alternative to the head-up display seen on BMW, Cadillac, Lexus and other premium cars, especially since it’s free.

2013 to 2014: A quick redesign of a redesign, but with more tech

The ninth-generation Honda Civic came out in the 2012 model year. First reviewers said handling was too soft, cockpit materials were too cheap, and overall it wasn’t much of a changes from the eighth generation. Buyers didn’t much notice and in fact made the Civic the fourth best-selling car of the year, ahead of two other competing compact cars in the sales top ten, the then-aging Toyota Corolla and the tech-heavy Ford Focus. But the early reviews stung and Honda whipped out an altered 2013 Honda Civic, which I tested.

On the 2013 Civic, you get standard Bluetooth, a USB jack, Pandora radio, a rear camera, text messages from your smartphone read aloud, and electronic stability control. The cockpit got better materials than the 2012 and a firmer suspension that is still not harsh. Honda continues the low-to-high model range of LX, EX, EX-L and EX-L Navi. Honda typically ties navigation into its costlier trim lines, ignoring people who want a simpler car but still want navigation.

Apple iOS mirroring coming in 2014 Civic

While Honda already announced specs for the 2014 Civic that comes available in December, one 2014 Civic feature was being held for early December announcement: Apple in the Car or Apple iOS mirroring. Honda appears poised to expand beyond Siri Eyes Free, which is the ability to talk to Siri using the car’s push-to-talk button and get spoken responses. With iOS mirroring, the iPhone display is replicated on the new center stack LCD. The touchscreen could control many of the phone’s applications with likely lockouts for video or games.

More than a dozen automakers support or will support Siri Eyes Free. Honda would be a pioneer with iOS mirroring, starting with the 2014 Civic. It remains to be seen how Honda and Apple handle potentially distracting apps, particularly texting and e-mail. Apple’s general description of iOS mirroring notes features already available on virtually all cars (play music, make phone calls, download phone book) and features that would be new. Apple says, “If your vehicle is equipped with iOS in the Car, you can connect your iPhone 5 and interact with it using the car’s built-in display and controls or Siri Eyes Free. Now you can easily and safely make phone calls, access your music, send and receive messages, get directions, and more.” That suggests text messaging would be part of iOS mirroring, along with navigation (“directions”), but no mention of e-mail. The screen and buttons are locked on a phone controlled by the car, so if there’s a feature that isn’t passed through to the car, the only way to access it would be to disconnect the phone.

In a conference call with investors over the summer, Apple CEO said, “Having something [iOS mirroring] is very, very important. It’s something that people want.”

On the road: calm ride, little excitement

The Honda Civic represents transportation more than lifestyle. Driving around town and also on a long highway trip, it was pleasant for driver and passengers. I tested the top-of-the-line Civic EX-L with leather trim and navigation. The 140 hp engine and five-speed automatic provided acceleration more suited to keeping up on freeways than passing on two-lane roads. I got mileage around 33 mpg in mostly highway driving; you might get 35-plus mpg on the highway with more conscientious driving. The car was quiet except when struggling to accelerate quickly. The back seat was spacious, but then the current Civic at 179 inches long is bigger than the first generation of Honda Accords.
Honda Civic sedan 2013
Highway cruising was especially pleasant with the row of gauges always within my peripheral vision. The speedometer was a good size. The LCD display or i-MID (intelligent multi information display to Honda) would switch from the audio or phone display to a navigation arrow when a turn came up, so I didn’t have to look over and down to the center stack LCD display. The horizontal fuel gauge, 20 illuminated segments in a long row, wasn’t very helpful because the eye can’t tell at a glance if there are 7 or 11 segments still lit; a semicircle would have been better, that or replacing the blank segments with empty, framed segments. The vertical fuel economy indicator can be useful or distracting, depending on how concerned you are about fuel efficiency. The i-MID is controlled by buttons on a steering wheel that is approaching button overload. The tachometer seemed almost too big and too colorful.

Everything about the car was okay: navigation display, controls, seating comfort, fit and finish. Nothing was spectacular. This is transportation, well done. The 2013 Civic lacks high-tech driver aids that are filtering down to the compact car class: adaptive cruise control, lane departure warning, blind spot detection, forward collision warning, and automatic parking assist. Adding satellite radio is a costly $367 dealer option, plus installation. For 2014, the Civic sedan gets half a blind spot warning system, on the passenger side. To be without a fuller suite of Civic driver assistance features will hurt Honda after 2014. Honda can’t wait for the next Civic cycle in 2017 or 2018.
2014 Honda Civic

Should you buy? First, shop around

The Honda Civic is one of the better choices among compact cars but it may not be the best. You need to look also at the Mazda3, Ford Focus , Hyundai Elantra and similar Kia Forte, Chevrolet Cruze, Subaru Impreza, and the recently redesigned Toyota Corolla. The Civic’s upper row of gauges makes it easy to see your speed or the distance to the next turn while still keeping the road and traffic in view.

The majority of buyers opt for the gasoline-powered Civic sedan. There is a two-door coupe with the option of a manual transmission. Honda also sells a natural gas Civic with just 110 hp and even gentler acceleration, a Civic hybrid with more power than the mainstream Civic and a 46 mpg EPA combined rating, and a high-fuel efficiency Civic HF with low rolling resistance tires, extra aerodynamics, and 35 mpg EPA combined fuel economy. If you need more power, look to the Civic Si sedan and coupe with a 205 hp four-cylinder engine. The Civic Sedan sells for about $19,000-$24,000 including freight for the 140 hp model.

Wait for the 2014 model if you want blind spot detection (passenger side only) via Honda Lane Watch, a rear-facing camera on the side mirror that was introduced with the current Honda Accord. The right side view looking backwards appears on the center stack LCD when you flick the right turn signal. The automatic transmission for 2014 will be a CVT (continuously variable transmission) and fuel economy will be up 1-2 mpg to 33 mpg (combined EPA rating). The 7-inch center stack LCD on all models except the entry LX is now a capacitive-touch pinch-tap-swipe Display Audio screen you can manipulate like a tablet and the radio volume knob is now an up-down button. The 2014 Civic will be the first Honda with HD Radio.
2014 Honda Civic
As for used Honda Civics, the 2012 model that kicked off the current generation isn’t as desirable, so you should expect it to be discounted a bit more than most year-old cars. It does have stability control. The previous generation of Civics, 2006-2011, is a good deal with one important exception: Only high-end Civics offered stability control. That’s an important safety feature, it can’t be retroffited, and if the Civic is being used by a newer driver, ESC is something you really want.

Bottom line: The Honda Civic will likely continue as the sales leader among compact cars. It has few weaknesses. But shop the competition, too, even if they don’t have the unique gauge packaging of the Civic and the possibility of iOS mirroring. The smaller Honda Fit and larger Honda Accord are class leaders in desirability and sales where the Civic leads in sales.

MotorTrend: First Drive: 2014 Honda Civic Coupe and Sedan

by Scott Evans of www.motortrend.com

If you've lost track of the ongoing Honda Civic saga, I'll catch you up. The Civic was redesigned for 2012, but received lukewarm reviews. Despite strong sales, Honda decided an emergency refresh was in order, and it was out for the 2013 model year, but the sedan received most of the updates while the coupe soldiered on relatively the same. Now, for 2014, the coupe received the big update as well, and the sedan picked up a few more improvements still. Got it? Good.

Let's start with the improvements both cars received. The two biggest changes you're likely to notice will be the new continuously variable transmission and the all-new infotainment system. The CVT replaces the ancient and out-classed five-speed automatic and does so in fine form. It's related but not identical to the new CVT in the larger Accord, but behaves the same way. It's one of the best CVTs on the market in my estimation, behaving somewhat similarly to a standard automatic transmission in simulating shifts rather than jumping to one RPM point and sitting there. Its greatest advantage, bar none, is that it's much, much smoother than the old five-speed. All of the jerkiness of the old gearbox at throttle tip-in and during shifts is gone. Driven back-to-back against a 2013 model, the whole powertrain feels smoother and more refined.

More good news: Honda estimates city fuel economy for the sedan will improve by two mpg to 30, which will help push combined fuel economy to 33 mpg from 32. Highway fuel economy holds at 39 MPG. If you want more, the Civic HF is likewise improved, picking up two mpg city, one highway and two combined for a total of 31 city, 42 highway and 35 combined. Numbers for the coupe haven't been announced yet, but they'll likely be the same.

If the CVT has a drawback, it makes the Civic feel slightly slower off the line. The aggressive first gear in the old five-speed meant you got pushed back in the seat a little when starting from a stop with moderate throttle. The CVT eliminates that surge, which while smoother, feels as though the car isn't pulling as hard from a stop. We'll have to wait until we can test the car to see if there's any actual difference in acceleration, but I doubt it. Beyond that feeling at launch, the new Civics feel no faster or slower than last year's. Unless, of course, you drop it into Sport.

That's right. The automatic Civic finally has a Sport mode and even paddle shifters. As you'd expect, Sport makes the throttle calibration more aggressive and keeps the revs higher. The result is a car that feels a bit more peppy and responsive. It frankly makes the standard Drive mode feel a little lethargic by comparison. In Drive, the emphasis is clearly on comfort and relaxation. The paddle shifters, should you choose to use them, will treat the CVT like a seven-speed gearbox and it shifts between those faux gears pretty quickly.

Testing, as I said, will have to wait for another day, but we can make an educated guess here. The 2014 Civic matches its new CVT to the same engine, but sports a new exhaust system that adds three horsepower and one pound-foot of torque. As such, we can confidently guess that the zero-to-60 mph time won't deviate much from the 9.1 seconds we recorded for a 2013 model. A roughly 17-second quarter-mile is likely as well, as is the 119-foot stopping distance we recorded last time. The only performance metric that could change would be the cornering grip, and that would be limited to the coupe.

It gets new dampers, slightly stiffer springs and a stiffer rear anti-roll bar, along with new 16-inch wheels and tires. Altogether, they may help lift the coupe's skid pad and figure eight numbers slightly from the 0.81 average g and the 28.5-second lap at 0.58 average g we recorded on that 2013 sedan. On our admittedly short test drive, the new coupe's handling didn't seem drastically different than the sedan's, with perhaps a bit better roll control when cornering and a slightly stiffer ride. Both cars still feel pretty light and handle reasonably well for the class.

The steering continues to feel light and artificial, with no feedback from the road. Matches the relaxed powertrain.
The other feature both cars share and will definitely grab your attention is the all new "Display Audio" (Display Audio+ if you get navigation) infotainment system. Completely replacing Honda's outdated infotainment system, Display Audio(+) is a huge step forward. Gone are all the little buttons around the edges, replaced with four permanent, touch-sensitive buttons on the left side: Home, Volume, Menu and Back. In a neat trick, the buttons disappear whenever the option isn't available, such as when you're already on the Home screen, and when the car is turned off. The large, display sports familiar blue-on-blue Honda graphics, but is far more usable than before. The Menu button is no longer a catch-all, but brings up a specific menu for the screen you're on, be it audio, nav or other. The result is that while you don't have immediate access to every function as you did with all the hard buttons, the screens and menus are less layered and easier to navigate.

Perhaps the greatest advancement of the new system is its gesture recognition. All the swiping, pinching, sliding and multi-tapping you do on your smartphone or tablet is recognized, and unlike certain other systems (looking at you, CUE), it works quite well. Scrolling through a list of, say, satellite radio stations can be done with a simple flick of the finger. That also works when scrolling on the map, which will zoom with pinches. Alternatively, just drag your finger across the map to move it. The screen also functions as the three-mode backup camera display and the LaneWatch display. Borrowed from the Accord, it mounts a camera under the passenger-side mirror and activates whenever you use the right turn signal and shows you what's in your blind spot.

The system's one drawback is in its sensitivity. A majority of the time, my inputs were recognized, but I found that if I didn't push a virtual button quite long enough (and we're talking fractions of a second here), it would light up, but wouldn't register the input. It's not quite as responsive as your smartphone in that regard. This was most prevalent and frustrating when trying to type in an address, as the system was further slowed as it tried to narrow the search while I was typing, which introduced a lag between when I hit the button, when it recognized the next input and when the screen changed. The system otherwise worked fantastically, and I would call it one of the best on the market right now.

We've talked a lot about the changes to both cars, but there are a few changes specific to the updated coupe. In addition to the slightly stiffer suspension, the coupe also gets some exterior cosmetic updates. The most notable is the new grille and headlights, which are similar to that of the new Fit compact hatch. We're not really sold on them. We do, however, like the more aggressive lower fascia and the strong character line running over the tops of the front fenders. Around back, new headlights and some dimples in the bumper liven things up a little. The coupe also gets exclusive wheels. Also receiving some updates is the Civic Si coupe. It gets an exclusive grille design (which we like better than the standard coupe's), a slightly different lower front fascia and exclusive 18-inch wheels.

Out back, it picks up a faux diffuser down low and a spoiler on the trunk. Inside, you get red inserts in all the seats.

Under the hood, it gets a grand total of four more horsepower and four more pound-feet of torque from an improved exhaust system. Here, again, we'll take a guess and say its zero-to-60 mph time will be unchanged from the 2013 Si coupe we tested. That means 6.1 seconds to 60 mph, followed by a 14.6-second quarter-mile at 95.6 mph. Skid pad performance may improve slightly from the 0.87 average g we recorded, as may the Figure Eight lap, which we clocked at 26.5 seconds at 0.66 average g. Fuel economy shouldn't change from the current 22 city/31highway rating. We weren't able to drive the updated Si, so we can't say yet if there are any noticeable differences in performance or handling on the road. All in all, the 2014 Honda Civic coupe and sedan are minor refreshes of already-competent vehicles.

The updates to each should help make the cars more attractive and more competitive against an ever-more-cutthroat segment. They don't rocket ahead, but they're now in no danger of quickly falling behind Given that Civic is already the segment sales leader, this improved car should continue that.

Best Selling, Fun-to-drive Honda Civic Enhanced Again for 2014 Model Year

The Honda Civic, America's best-selling compact car, extends its competitive lead and value for customers with a long list of enhancements for the 2014 model year. Building on the model year 2012 redesign and model year 2013 major refresh, the 2014 Civic features exciting and innovative upgrades including:
  • New sportier exterior styling for Civic Coupe and Civic Si Coupe
  • Interior styling upgrades for all Civic models
  • New available CVT that enhances performance and fuel efficiency
  • New available Display Audio with 7-inch pinch, tap and swipe touchscreen
  • Increased engine performance on all models except Natural Gas and Hybrid
  • Civic HF achieves a class-leading 35 mpg combined EPA rating
  • New available features include Honda LaneWatch blind spot display and Smart Entry with Push Button start
"Year over year, we have continued to strengthen the competitive position of Civic with new performance, features and value for the money, and 2014 is no exception," said John Mendel, executive vice president of American Honda. "This 2014 Civic is our best offering yet, and makes Civic not just the best-selling, but once again the outright best pick in the compact class."

The 2014 Honda Civic Sedan and Coupe launch at Honda dealerships nationwide on December 4, 2013, followed by the Civic Hybrid and Civic Natural Gas early in 2014, and the Civic Si Coupe and Si Sedan in the spring.

Civic Coupe styling and performance
Following a major refresh of Civic Sedan styling for 2013, Honda turns its attention to the Civic Coupe, implementing a host of exterior design changes that include a more aggressive grille, fender, hood and headlight design. Additional Civic Coupe exterior changes include new taillight lenses, sportier front and rear bumpers, new side mirrors and new wheel designs, with larger size wheels on some models. Inside, a host of premium interior refinements were applied to all models, including new seat fabrics, door panel trim and audio panel color coordination.

The Civic Coupe also receives additional performance enhancements, including revised suspension tuning with higher spring rates and a stiffer rear stabilizer bar. A revised exhaust system raises power output by 3 horsepower to 143 hp2 and 1 lb-ft of torque to 129 lb-ft3. For added driver engagement, the Civic EX and EX-L Coupe models feature new steering wheel-mounted paddle shifters.

New Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT)
Adding to Civic fuel-efficiency and fun-to-drive performance, an all-new Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT) replaces the 5-speed automatic in both the Coupe and Sedan (except Civic Natural Gas); the Civic Hybrid retains its current CVT. The new CVT enhances responsiveness by providing quicker and smoother acceleration and improves fuel efficiency with a 22 percent wider ratio range and reduced internal friction.

The new CVT contributes to higher EPA fuel economy ratings1 of 30 mpg city (+2 mpg; +1 in models equipped with paddle shifters) and 33 mpg combined (+1 mpg). The even more fuel-efficient Civic HF improves to an EPA-rated 42 mpg highway (+1 mpg).

Civic Si styling and performance
The Civic Si Coupe benefits from the same styling enhancements as the standard Civic Coupe but adds Si-exclusive design cues, including a unique lower front bumper garnish, larger rear decklid spoiler, and distinctive front and rear air diffusers. Both the Si Coupe and Si Sedan get larger, 18-inch wheels and tires with new wheel designs.

The performance-tuned Civic Si Coupe and Sedan also get revised suspension tuning, with higher spring rates, new dampers and stiffer rear stabilizer bar. Power is boosted to 205 horsepower4 (+4 horsepower) and 174 lb-ft of torque5 (+4 lb-ft) via a retuned exhaust system.

New Premium Features
New innovations and premium features abound on the 2014 Honda Civic. Standard and available features include a new 7-inch Display Audio touchscreen control center with optional navigation function, convenient Smart Entry with Push Button start, expanded view driver's mirror and Honda LaneWatch™ blind spot display for enhanced driver visibility, plus available auto on/off headlights and power driver seat with 8-way adjustability.

The 2014 Honda Civic Coupe and Sedan are available in LX, EX, EX-L and EX-L Navi versions. The Civic HF is available in a sedan body style. The Civic Si Coupe and Sedan are available in standard and Navi trims. Standard, Leather, Navi, and Leather Navi variants are available for the Civic Hybrid. The Civic Natural Gas is available in standard trim and a new Leather Navi version.  The 2014 Civic Sedan and Coupe, including Si models, are offered in a new Modern Steel Metallic exterior color, while the Si Coupe and Si Sedan are available in a new Orange Fire Pearl.

Customers can view, build and price the 2014 Honda Civic at automobiles.honda.com/civic starting December 4, 2013, when the models arrive at Honda dealerships nationwide.

Powertrains
For 2014, the gasoline engine powered Civic Sedan and Coupe models receive an all-new Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT) to replace the 5-speed automatic transmission on most 2013 models. Paddle shifters are available on the Civic Coupe CVT. A manual transmission is still available on the LX and EX trim Sedan and Coupe. The Civic LX, EX, EX-L, EX-L Navi and Si models get a power and torque boost.

The Civic's responsive i-VTEC® 1.8-liter 16-valve four-cylinder engine, producing 143 horsepower2 and 129 lb-ft of torque3, is now available with a new performance- and fuel- efficiency enhancing CVT (replacing the 5-speed automatic transmission). Providing a wider gear ratio range than the previous five-gear automatic, the CVT delivers quicker and smoother acceleration as well as improved fuel efficiency.

Fuel economy ratings are 30/39/33 city/highway/combined, an improvement of +2 mpg city (+1 mpg improvement for models equipped with paddle shifters) and +1 mpg combined compared to 2013 models equipped with the 5-speed automatic. The new, 12-percent lighter CVT transmission has increased efficiency through reduced internal friction and a 22-percent wider ratio range. On the Civic Coupe EX and EX-L models, the CVT transmission can be controlled with steering wheel-mounted paddle shifters to provide a more engaging driver experience. D mode is fully automatic, however the paddle shifters can be used to downshift the transmission for greater engine braking for situations such as descending a steep hill. The transmission can also be upshifted in D mode. When the paddle shifters are used in D mode, full automatic operation will resume after a short time. For spirited driving, S mode includes seven ratios and maintains the selected ratio until the driver operates the paddle shifters again. The system will only shift automatically to prevent over revving the engine or lugging.

To increase the excitement level of the Civic Si models' exhilarating driving experience, refinements to the exhaust system increase engine performance to 205 peak horsepower4 and 174 lb-ft of torque5. This is an increase of 4 horsepower and 4 lb-ft of torque over the previous model. The Civic Si is powered by an i-VTEC® 2.4-liter DOHC 16-valve engine mated to a close-ratio, 6-speed manual transmission. The Si also includes as standard equipment a helical limited-slip differential. The performance differential helps minimizes front wheel slippage for enhanced steering precision when accelerating and cornering.

The 2014 Civic Hybrid features a 1.5-liter, 8-valve, 2-stage i-VTEC® four-cylinder gasoline engine equipped with Honda's Integrated Motor Assist (IMA®) system coupled with a Lithium-Ion battery pack, producing 110 horsepower6 and 127 lb-ft of torque7. The 2-stage i-VTEC system cuts off all four cylinders, allowing the electric motor to propel the car at low speeds or while cruising on a level surface. The cylinders also cut off during deceleration for friction reduction. Paired to its existing Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT), the Civic Hybrid achieves a combined EPA rating of 46 mpg1. All Civic models except the Coupe Si and Sedan Si feature Honda's ECO Assist™ technology, which can help drivers operate the vehicle more efficiently.

The Civic Natural Gas is powered by a 1.8-liter, 16-valve, SOHC 4-cylinder engine, paired with its existing 5-speed automatic transmission that produces 110 horsepower8 and 106 lb-ft of torque9. The engine is extremely clean and achieves California's AT-PZEV emissions standards. To attain AT-PZEV status, the vehicle must be a Super-Ultra-Low-Emission Vehicle (SULEV) with zero evaporative emissions and must carry a 15-year/150,000-mile warranty on emission equipment10. Since its introduction in 1998, the CNG-burning Civic has consistently been 90% cleaner than the ULEV standard.

Body
The Civic Coupe's youthful and sporty nature is amplified with fresh and aggressive styling changes for 2014. The dynamic capabilities of the coupe are portrayed by a bold new grill, headlights and taillights, and sculptured hood, front fenders, side mirrors and rear bumper. The high-performing Civic Si Coupe is further enhanced with exclusive and uniquely styled grill and front and rear fascia. The coupe's sporty styling cues continue with premium, athletic looking redesigned wheels. The Civic LX Coupe gets larger 16-inch steel wheels, the EX Coupe receives new 16-inch alloy wheels, the EX-L gets larger 17-inch alloy wheels and the Civic Si Coupe receives larger 18-inch alloy wheels with a new design.

Changes made to the Civic Sedan, Civic Si Sedan, Civic Hybrid and Civic Natural Gas in 2013 continue to provide a sporty and upscale look and are enhanced for 2014 with some trims receiving new wheel designs. The Civic EX-L and Si Sedan get the same upgraded 17-inch and 18-inch alloy wheels as those on the restyled Coupe EX-L and Si.

Chassis
For 2014 the Honda Civic LX Coupe and Si models receive upgraded suspension tuning to enhance steering response and roll feel. In 2013 the Civic lineup benefitted from substantial changes to enhance handling refinement and noise isolation. These included a reworked Electronic Power Steering (EPS), suspension spring changes and thicker stabilizer bars with new Teflon-lined mounting bushings. Other upgrades include larger diameter front brake rotors on some models for better stopping power, and a host of noise, vibration and harshness (NVH) countermeasures to reduce road, engine and wind noise.

Interior
Several refinements to the 2014 Civic interior further enhance its youthful and sporty, yet advanced and premium appearance. The Civic LX and EX models, Civic HF sedan and standard Civic Natural Gas receive upgraded seating and door panel fabric with an enhanced premium texture. The Civic Si seats are changed to further enhance the sporty look with exclusive seat fabric and decoration. The interior of sedan models come in black, gray and beige options, coupe models have black or black and gray color schemes, and the Si comes in a dynamic black and red. The audio panels of the Civic Coupe and Sedan have been upgraded with premium finishes: the LX trim gets a new painted panel, while the EX and EX-L receive an advanced brushed metallic treatment. The Civic Si gets a high tech and sporty carbon fiber-styled design. The Civic Natural Gas receives leather seating surfaces on the new top-of-the-line Leather and Navi trim.

New Display Audio Interface
For 2014, all Civic model trim levels except LX include the all-new 7-inch Display Audio touchscreen. The intuitive and easy-to-use Display Audio lets you swipe, tap and pinch – just like on a tablet computer or smartphone – to control the vehicle's audio system, display settings and other advanced features. The Civic Coupe and Sedan EX-L, Civic Hybrid and Civic Natural Gas with Navi models include the Display Audio with a fully integrated and fully featured Honda Satellite-Linked Navigation System ™ with continuously updated traffic information11.

Safety
At Honda, safety is always a top priority and the 2014 Civic is a prime example of that focus. Civic safety begins with the Advanced Compatibility Engineering™ (ACE™) body structure that was redesigned in 2013 to provide increased protection to vehicle occupants in a frontal collision, including front end structures to help disperse crash energy in narrow overlap frontal crashes. The 2014 Civic's safety technologies also include standard dual-stage, multiple-threshold front airbags, an anti-lock braking system (ABS), Electronic Brake Distribution (EBD) and Brake Assist, Vehicle Stability Assist™ (VSA®)12 with traction control, a tire pressure monitoring system, Daytime Running Lights (DRL), and a pedestrian injury mitigation design in the front of the vehicle.

The 2014 Honda Civic Hybrid safety features include standard Forward Collision Warning (FCW) and Lane Departure Warning (LDW) systems. FCW is designed to detect a possible collision with another vehicle or object ahead and provides visible and audible alerts to the driver. LDW provides visible and audible alerts if the driver begins to drift out of a detected lane without using the turn signal. The 2014 Honda Civic Sedan and Coupe are expected to earn the top rating of GOOD in the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety's (IIHS) stringent small overlap front crash test, and receive a TOP SAFETY PICK rating from the IIHS. The 2014 Civic Sedan and Civic Hybrid received the top 5 Star Overall Vehicle Score in the NHTSA's New Car Assessment Program (NCAP), the Civic Coupe received a 4 Star rating.

Warranty
The 2014 Honda Civic is covered by a 3-year/36,000-mile new-car limited warranty, a 5-year/60,000-mile powertrain limited warranty and a 5-year/unlimited-mile corrosion limited warranty. Hybrid models have a 15-year/150,000-mile emissions warranty when the vehicle is registered and normally operated in California and certain states that have adopted California Zero-Emission Vehicle regulations. The IMA battery on the Civic Hybrid is covered by a 10-year/150,000-mile limited warranty. This warranty also applies to the SULEV 1.8L CVT equipped Civic models in states with a Zero Emission Vehicle (ZEV) program.

Awards
In addition to receiving numerous awards for the completely redesigned 2012 Honda Civic, the refreshed 2013 model was also awarded and recognized with accolades. It was named "Best Buy Compact Car" by Consumer Guide and "Top Family Car of 2013" by Edmunds.com and Parents Magazine. In addition, KBB awarded the Civic "Best Resale Value: Top 10" status and the Civic Si "Best Retail Value: Sporty Compact Car." Civic was also recognized with a "Polk Automotive Loyalty" award in the compact car segment, Edmunds.com named the Civic "Best Retained Value" and the American Council for an Energy-Efficient Economy included the Civic Hybrid amongst the "Greenest Vehicles of 2013."

AutoExpress: Euro Honda Civic 2014 review

Updates to the Honda Civic boost appeal, but is it enough to worry the best hatchbacks?

by Luke Madden of www.autexpress.co.uk

This updated Honda Civic is certainly better than the outgoing model, but the margins here are quite small – a back-to-back drive is necessary to feel the differences. But Honda should be applauded for its cycle of improvements to address customer complaints about the interior and handling because after all, those are the people who matter most.

The refresh to the Honda Civic for 2014 is subtle, and Auto Express has driven the new model ahead of the order books opening early next year.

It’s not quite a full-blown facelift, just a series of minor tweaks aimed at lifting quality, improving handling and boosting high-speed stability.

Styling updates are limited to the gloss black grille and wheelarch surrounds – rather than dark grey – a gloss black strip below the rear windscreen and a contrasting black diffuser, rather than a body-coloured one.

There are changes inside, too, like new piano black detailing on the dashboard and steering wheel. We tried an updated Civic back- to-back with a current model, and the changes do improve the way it drives – albeit subtly.

Tweaks to the suspension have meant that through bumpy corners the Civic now feels a lot more tied down to the road.

There’s a fraction less roll, too. Changes to the steering have ensured it now feels quicker to react to driver inputs, but it’s still not as crisp as the set-up in the Focus. The 1.6-litre i-DTEC is unchanged, so it’s as punchy and efficient as ever, if rough-sounding.

The starting price will remain at £16,995, but trim levels are likely to change. A new feature offered for the first time in a Honda is a safety package including active city braking and lane departure warning, which will cost around £800.

Key specs

2014 Honda Civic hatchback launched with mechanical and cosmetic tweaks

With update electronic power steering

Honda has introduced the 2014 Civic hatchback in Europe which brings an assortment of mechanical and visual changes.

The Civic lineup was updated in September at the Frankfurt Motor Show with the introduction of the more practical Tourer version and now Honda has prepared some changes for its hatchback sibling. The most important modification is in the electric power steering system which has been retuned to provide a more secure control during higher speeds.

In addition, the front and rear dampers were revised for improving body control, while the toe and camber of the rear suspension were realigned to improve the hatchback's handling. All these changes are a response to the feedback provided by Honda clients at the firm's dealerships and were conducted at its Swindon, UK base.

Visual tweaks are limited to the privacy glass on the lower rear window along with piano black touches on the number plate surround, tailgate and lower bumper. Before this minor revision, these areas used to be painted in the same color as the body. A piano black look has also been applied on the front bumper which previously had an anthracite finish. Honda has installed fresh new alloys and made the wheel arch garnishes a bit darker.

Step inside the cabin and you will find white stitching on the seats, steering wheel and knee pad, along with aluminum inserts around the cup holder together with a few glossy black inserts. In the UK there will be an optional 500 GBP Advanced Driving Assist System package available on the Tourer as well bringing blind spot warning, traffic sign recognition, lane departure warning and active city braking.

The 2014 Honda Civic hatchback is programmed to go on sale in January. Pricing details have not been disclosed but chances are there will be a minor increase justified by these upgrades.
